10D and EF-S 10-22mm

Will this lens be compatible with the 10D? I hope so...it sounds AWESOME.

Re: 10D and EF-S 10-22mm

No it won't go on the 10D. At least not without modification of the lens. It uses the new EF-S mount, which is an EF lens with a protrusion to prevent it from mounting on regular (read EOS film cameras) bodies, because of mirror travel or some such thing, the mirror could hit the lens on a film body, damaging one or both. (Or at least I think that is what will happen.)

Some folks over at dpreview.com have found that if you remove the protrusion it will fit and work on the D30, D60 and 10D bodies. There are hacks on the dpreview forums instructing how to remove the protrusion and use it on older D series bodies.

I really dont understand the reson why EFS lenses cant just have the same exacto mount as other eos lenses. Nikons DX lenses can be mounted on a Nikon FM2!

Cmon Canon, EFS should be mounted in any EOS cameras.

Re: 10D and EF-S 10-22mm

The new lenses protrude farther back into the camera towards the focal plane. This has the advantage of making it easier optically to design lenses for any given f-number for the 1.6-crop factor cameras. This means lighter and less expensive lenses for these cameras. It also means that the larger-sized reflex mirror on full-frame cameras can physically hit the rear lens element when an exposure is made, damaging both the lens and the mirror, so Canon made the new lenses incompatible with the old mount to prevent this problem from happening.

Re: 10D and EF-S 10-22mm

It's supposed to be a technological advancement of the lenses to take advantage of the smaller imagers (and associated smaller mirrors, etc.). Apparently, there are advantages to be had by placing the rear element of the lens closer to the imager plane.

In at least some cases I suspect it's a marketing move - for example, the EF-S 18-55 can quite successfully be modified to fit a 10D. I've done it. The lens element gets no closer than the element in the Canon 50mm f/1.8.

Re: 10D and EF-S 10-22mm

Thanks for the answer...I guess there won't be any wide angle shots taken thru my 10D anytime soon....Do the S series lenses work on the 1D mk II?

That works for the 18mm zoom. Nobody has had a 10mm zoom in hand to try it. The EF-S specs allow for the backfocus to be short enough to strike the mirror of the 10D (and other EOS cameras besides the DRebel. There is an excellent chance the 10mm zoom takes advantage of that spec.
