Re: Help. Wedding this weekend - can\'t download images
Again, echo the sentiment, get a card reader, USB 2 if the laptop supports it. Also, consider downloader pro from www.breezesys.com. Depending on how its set up, you just insert the card, and away it goes. You don't have to do anything. 30 day trial version is fully functional, apart from it comes up with a nag box when it starts up, but to get rid of this, it is some small amount.

Regarding card readers (and they are an excellent idea), assuming that the host computer has a USB 2.0 port, be sure that the reader you buy has the USB "Hi-speed" logo on it. (It has a little red "swoop" above the "USB".)
If the package only says "USB 2.0", it is possible that the reader only operates at USB "Full speed" (the speed at which most USB 1.1 readers operate).
USB "Full speed" is sort of like, "Sir, that is our 'Large' milkshake. Perhaps you meant to order our 'Jumbo' milkshake."
Best regards,

Can anybody suggest what I should tweak on her computer?
[/ QUOTE ]
We have obviously missed the core of your question. If you must use her laptop, then I would recommend running all updates on it (Windows Update), which I'm sure she may have an objection to for who knows what else may break in the Windoze world.
It is evident that laptop is missing essential drivers. Perhaps some archives have been inadvertently erased from the 386 folder, who knows. I would recommend following each step in the 10D installation CD; there is a step there to update the USB drivers, and even after you do that, you will need (as it clearly states) to connect your camera.
You may have to do the same for any card reader you may buy, for who knows what else is missing from her machine. Usually the readers come with drivers for Win98/2K
Good luck.

Also, with an NT os like win2k...(or XP) it may be best to plug in the device first than load drivers after recognition....which in some cases can be opposite of the 9x platforms...you may need to uninstall any unknown devises reboot, then plug in hardware and install drivers. the other way is to install driver from disks than plug in hardware.\
As it relates to card reader....for a lap top instead of using the usb port use a PCMCIA flash card reader, it will cost less than $15 (min was $12.95 sandisk) and the bus speed if the PCMCIA slot is defineately faster than usb 1.1 and IMO (I have not emptied a full card yet) is faster than usb 2.0
If you plan to download and erase...what I do is download first, than reformat the card in the camera, only after download is complete, I have lost images on a card (in a testin situation) while doing a download and delete operation....this if the computer crashes during download all is ok....also I would recommend getting a program like photo recovery, it was worth the $40
as the Zoombrowser situation, I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling...could have some corruption going on.....reinstall drivers for the camera if you are cabling directly to camera for download. Also, contact canon for support, and the other option is to try a different browser like Breeze browser (I have been meaning to give that a try) rumer has it that ZoomBrowser is not as good as some of the other ones out there....canon is better at making the camera equipment...not so sure about the software. It works I guess.

Re: Help. Wedding this weekend - can\'t download images
Michael, OK card readers computrs etc. You were asked to take some candid shots of the wedding.
(this topic went wayside to the computers) I shoot with a 10D and I can get 100+ images on a 256MB card in High-Res Jpeg. Even if you edit the cards while shooting and delete the bad images you have two cards which is 200+ images. Now, are you a guest or a paid employee of the wedding party? Have fun and don't worry about downloading and the computer)it will distract you and other wedding guests). If you have 2-3 256MB cards in your pocket, and you do some editing in the camera you will be just fine. The last wedding I was at I was in the same situation. I set the camera on "P", popped the flash and shot what I saw. I beat the paid photographer in shot number and got the shot's he missed(garter over the grooms shoulder, brides first dance with father, etc...). Now, all be it the shots were'nt technically proper, but the bride and groom sent a note letting me know that they favored my images over their paid photogs. I wasn't worried about downloading or clearing the cards, I just shot, went home and edited. I took over 200 images and whittled it away to the 50+ best. You're there to have fun with your friends, the camera is just an incidental. Good Luck! And have fun! Bob
P.S. I doubt that any image they will print would require the information a RAW file has. Most people woould like to just print the candids on their home computer.
Note: I usually only use RAW for Commercial clients who need that much info.

those are some pretty good words bob....sometimes I get my best photos when I am not worried about the pressure and just sit back and shoot. you might even consider getting a 512 card that will give you a total of about 400 images.....since you are not shooting the formals you should not run out of space...and it will be nice to have the larger card incase you do shoot some RAW images

Re: Help. Wedding this weekend - can\'t download images
I would still go with RAW if you can.
It isn't necessarily about better picture quality. It is about having options for those images that you screw up one way or another - overexposed, underexposed, wrong white balance, etc.
In the heat of action it inevitably happens. With RAW you can try to salvage the image at conversion.
