300D kits lens

Just taken delivery of my new 300D and keep reading (here and elsewhere) that the supplied lens must have the 1.6 law applied to it.

if this is true, can someone please tell why? this lens appears to have been developed for a digital camera (the 300D) and for that camera alone. I read that it will work on no other camera.

then why should Canon name it under the "analogue" measurement asdistinct from the digital measure; I guess that the measuremrent of the lens does remain standard but it does seem strange that a generation or three of photographers who grew up with the understanding of the meaning of 15mm in a standard lens should not have to multiply by 1.6 every time.
ah well I know that when we all get 1:1 instead of 1:1.6, then it will cease to be an issue.

Best wishes from the Land of Oz.

Garry

Re: 300D kits lens

I am far from an expert on this...but I believe the key here is the size of the sensor, not the lens. But I could be wrong.

UPDATE: 300D kits lens

Actually, I was just on another camera website and saw a post that confirms what I wrote above:

"The reason for the enhanced focal length is the chip on the Rebel (and 10D for that matter) is smaller than 35mm film so the focal length must actually be multiplied by 1.6."

It is my understanding that it will work on any EOS camera. I have never seen where it will only work on the rebel.

Re: UPDATE: 300D kits lens

The kit lens that comes with the Rebel is an EF-S mount rather than the standard Canon EF mount. The lens protrudes further into the camera than an EF mount lens; thus it can only be used with the Rebel. EF lenses can be used in an EF-S camera without issue; they simply don't go as far into the mirror box.

Re: UPDATE: 300D kits lens

Am certain the supplied lens will not work on anything (yet!) than the 300D. not the issue.
and also I understand the 1.6 factor is because of the CMOS.
but it's all about knowing what the lens can do and, for me, that comes from years (too many) of experience.
whatever! it will all be 1:1 soon and I'll have to mortgage the farm to buy a new Canon SuperEOS Magna Charta mode with 1200 megapixels!

Re: 300D kits lens

Garry,

There is no "analog vs. digital" measurement issue here.

All Canon lenses are "named" in terms of their focal length (among other things).

The focal lemgth of the 300D "kit" lens is specified just like that of any other lens. Its shortest focal length is 18 mm, and at that focal length it behaves (in that regard) like any other lens with that focal length.

Indeed on the 300D any lens with a focal length of 18 mm will give the same field of view as would a 28.8 mm focal length lens on a full-frame 35 mm still camera.

I'm afraid that part of "the generation or three" of photographers who grew up understanding the meaning of a 15 mm lens (meaning, the field of view it would give on a full frame 35 mm still camera) also had to learn something new when they got rich and began began using a 6 x 4.5 cm camera.

Best regards,

Doug
