first of all i have to say that i like the canon gear but i would like it much better if canon would make substantial firmware updates about their cameras. now there will come out a new camera before canon make an substantial improvement of the firmware. i do digital since the early 520 came out and kodak made some good updates but canon?
btw. do somebody know why the 10d dont write to the cf card when the shutter button is pressed half down for focussing? (one thing i really dont like on the 10d)

It's simply an issue of the type of respect a company has for it's customers. Note I did not say "lack of"; I honestly think each company thinks differently of it's paying customers.
Without wanting to over-generalise, I will just a bit: US managed companies typically push innovation and try to carry customers with them, Japanese companies have, since the 50s at least, built good products, but "what you see is what you get", while UK companies; hmm, less said about my local colleagues the better I think...

That is not always a simple decision. With SLRs, if you are serious, you tend to buy-in to a specific manufacturer by buying expensive glass and other accessories. The camera body is only one component.

Camera won't write to CF card when shutter button is half pressed: Presumably, this is because the camera really can't tell if you are merely going to focus or are going to take a picture => the amount of effort to go from half press to full press is trivial. By stopping card operations, presumably the camera is going to be ready to take a picture sooner.
Why is this annoying? Are you running out of buffer space? Personally, if you routinely over run the 9 shot buffer, you probably should have a 1D and not a 10D.
As for firmware, could this be evidence that initial quality control "got it right". The same cannot be said for the Kodak product -> hence the firmware updates.

Since the companies are driven by the customers.. US customers don't mind partially completed goods, but Japanese customers want something that is complete.
