Re: canon firmware policy

Since the companies are driven by the customers.. US customers don't mind partially completed goods, but Japanese customers want something that is complete

In fairness to Canon, the 10D has worked well from day one, and the updates have not addressed any major issues.

An example of US companies. In South Africa we have just been subjected to radio modems, that are great, but have been released long before their time.

The Japanese commentator has an excellent point. I know that I can buy canon and that it will do what it claims.

Re: canon firmware policy

hi,

++++Why is this annoying? Are you running out of buffer space? Personally, if you routinely over run the 9 shot buffer, you probably should have a 1D and not a 10D.

i knew that for a really fast camera i had to buy the 1d. the buffer overload just happens when i shoot portraits and its not the main thing but i am curious about why it dont write the datas.

just one example what can be done by firmwareupdate (my opinion) is the slow writing speed for microdrives. i heard that this is a softwear problem and the writing speed depends how good the software is working for the microdrive.

i didnt find the canon/kodak 520 a "buggy" thing. but just for an example kodak did an update that gives you the possibility to make a exposure +/- like an raw file.

i dont want to say that canon makes no good cameras or have a poor customer service ( if so i woudnt have canon gear since 11 years) i just feel that they could improve their stuff if they had an eye about their software.

best regards
karl

Re: canon firmware policy

The write speed to the card is primarily determined by the hardware invilved; a firmware update isn't going to change it significantly. So there's no reason to issue an update that isn't going to change anything anyhow.

That is not always a simple decision. With SLRs, if you are serious, you tend to buy-in to a specific manufacturer by buying expensive glass and other accessories. The camera body is only one component.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course. That is why I have a Canon body. And I also agree with Jim - maybe you should have looked at the 1D.

Re: canon firmware policy

At no point did I say I wan't happy with my D30 and D60; I just expressed my opinion that there is an attitude that even simple advances are not back-ported to existing customers. I hope this changes with a future version of the new DPP and EVU software for example.

Re: canon firmware policy

The probable reason why Canon does not backport changes (if they are even possible to backport) to existing cameras is that these changes would require a quality assurance effort. This effort costs money. Why should Canon (or any other company) invest in doing QA for adding functionality to an existing product, if they can't recover their investment?
