Technically I'm still an Aussie. My attempts at a Texan accent just don't work

>>Anywhere that Canon has pdf's for flash, lenses, etc? <<

Not that I know of. Up to now, Canon Inc. has not provided any PDFs to us for flash units or lenses. We are negotiating with them to bring their policy more into line with the digital camera group.

FYI, up to now, individual sales companies like Canon USA have been posting manuals on their own web sites as mentioned earlier.

However, Canon Inc. is in the process of strengthening their web-based customer support initiatives through a new program called the Web Self-Support System, or WSSS for short. They are already providing an interactive troubleshooting service for compact digital cameras and DSLRs, and the schedule calls for them to assume full responsibility for posting manuals, drivers, and firmware updates later this year. When the schedule is finalized, I will post the information here.

In the meantime, click the link for "Interactive Troubleshooting" on this page if you want to get a feel for the current WSSS offerings:

Re: Download site for pdf. manuals etc.

I'm moving somewhat OT for the thread, but... I followed Chuck's link to WSSS and inquired about image quality problems followed up by AF problems, which gave me an interesting article in response. Some of the English is slightly stilted (I suspect some translation from the Japanese), but I picked a couple of quotes that caught my attention, which I thought might interest others:

[ QUOTE ]
For example, imagine observing an image taken with the EOS10D (6,000,000 pixels) on the 17 inch SXGA CRT monitor (1280x1024) from a distance of 16-20 inches (40-50 cm) away. Under these conditions, the size of the image displayed on the monitor is equivalent to approximately a 32 in. x 21 in. (82cm x 54cm) print size, viewed at a distance of 16-20 in. from you. This is quite a different circumstance from film. In this case you are seeing slight errors in AF magnified many times over when they would not normally be visible when the image is printed. Even if small errors in AF are visible on the computer monitor, these errors may not be visible when the image is viewed as a full size print...

Canon digital SLR cameras are designed to perform moderate edge sharpness corrections of your original image. This is based on Canon's source-oriented policy, rich information of the original image should be recorded and kept for the later processing flexibility. Therefore, if you view the recorded image without any modifications, you may see that the image is not enough sharp nor have enough contrast. In this case, the image can be sharpened to your taste by processing with retouching software later.
