Re: I think I figured this out

[ QUOTE ]
I was wandering in Staples today and saw the Canon PictBridge printer - 4 X 6 photos right from your picture. This smaller JPEG would give 256 dpi at 4 X 6 -- probably perfect for the PictBridge printer. That is why it is new.

[/ QUOTE ]

Interesting possibility. Anyone able to tell if JPEGs from the 10D with the latest firmware have this additional JPEG? IIRC one of the parts of the firmware upgrade had something to do with PictBridge.

Chuck, can you help us any on this?

The great unwashed are going nuts over this!

[ QUOTE ]
There has been considerable "interest" among the denizens of the DPR 300D forum over the "discovery" that the large and medium Exif JPEG (.JPG) output files, in addition to the main image and the well-known thumbnail image, also contain a third JPEG image at 1536 x 1024 px.

It appears to typically account for about 450 KB of the total file size.

Do we know the purpose of this?

Evidently this is a "feature" of the 300D not paralleling the situation on the 10D.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Doug Kerr

Re: Chuck, can you help us any on this?

I'm looking forward to information of this.

If a future version of ZoomBrowser or FVU could automatically strip the preview image out I'd be a happy camper. Since I sometimes upload the pure JPGs to an online photo print service it'd be nice to have each file smaller by 0.4MB. Not to mention the local storage of a few thousand images

No one's confirmed (nor denied) whether the 10D 2.0 firmware has double JPEGs in it yet...

Maybe this is why they bumped the version number from "1" to "2"?

I've heard no shrieks about escalation in file size from the Upper House.
