Re: 1D Owner, 300D or 10D for Wife?

Errr. Also not flaming but - perhaps a note from the distaff side? Why not let her join the forums and this discussion, ask questions, and decide for herself? I gather she has some specific uses in mind and she must certainly be aware of her preferences and capabilities.

I'm more than sure you don't mean it but it does sound a tad condescending and I gather it's not a gift so...

Re: 1D Owner, 300D or 10D for Wife?

I guess I'd use one of my DSLRs if I needed more flash than comes with the A70. Also, an A70 with a EX550 flash on it would kind of defeat the purpose of getting the A70. Sure is nice to have a lot of choices though! What about the G5?

Perhaps another direction would also work for your wife. Last year I went on a vacation to Ireland with my 16 year old son and I didn't want to carry a lot of gear...

I settled on a Cano A70.

In October 2002, I went to Ireland to attend a wedding at Beaufort Parish new Killarney. I left everything at home but a Contax G1 (film) with a 35mm and 90mm lenses. I used available light in the church and loved the lightweight. I got great results but missed the digital files. However, I loved the small size!

With that thought in mind, I considered something like a A70. However, my biggest concern is the lack of a good flash. My wife's day job is a teacher and when at school she usually needs something with more punch.

I looked at some digicams with a hotshoe. The price and size goes up a good bit and it still has the digicam drawbacks (shutter lag, etc.).

Thanks.

Philip

Decision made

Point well taken. Also not flaming but she hates Internet forums. She feels that the flame wars outweight the good information you can get from a forum. I feel the opposite. She we agree to disagree.

Now for the main reason of this post. We talked and I asked her to decide for herself an to do some research on her own.

About eight weeks ago friends asked me for some advice. They were dissatisified with the shutter lag of their P&S. They have past SLR experiences. I suggested they look at the Digital Rebel.

Last Saturday we had dinner with them. They told us that they bought the Digital Rebel before Thanksgiving and were very satisfied. The husband said that he had almost no buyer remorse. Usually, when he spent that much money he would later question if it were wise but not this time.

Yesterday (Tuesday), my wife told me that she wanted to buy the camera. I then ordered it from B&H Photo. She can't wait to get it!

I will report back later.

Thanks for all of your input!

Philip

Re: Decision made

I'm curious as to whether you & your wife have had enough time to evaluate your 300D. I use a 1Ds on my "day job" but we're planning a two-week Europe vacation this summer, and I don't want to haul all that around as a tourist (or put it at risk!). I've been considering the Digital Rebel over a P&S but am a little put off by all of the "error 99" problems I've seen here and on other forums. I realize that the 300D is not a 1Ds or even a 10D, but I wouldn't expect it to be a serious backup camera at any point (rely too much on my full-frame for my shift lenses), so that's not an issue. Have you had enough time and experience with the camera to offer some insight?

I was wondering about that too. I often see "I have this expensive camera but my wife needs the other one" questions too on DPreview, kind of those "My friend has this itch, you see..." indirect questions.

No shame on having a 10D or 300D if one already owns the 1Ds or 1D. If the other person is used to one's photographic equipment, perhaps the availability of features would be better; the 300D lacks many features I like with my Elan IIe, EOS-3 and 10D, not to say that the 10D would probably deal a lot better if dropped or operated under light drizzle (and I did just that two weeks ago, without a single problem).

If the other person doesn't care, then I'm sure that a used D60 would be cheaper and more durable than the 300D.

My two pence.
