Why pay? Irfanview is a really nice freeware image editing program that has a very effective screen capture. http://www.irfanview.com

Re: Screen Shot...

Michael, Doug, Paul and Others,

There are many third party screen shot applications. However both Windows and Mac OS offer built-in support for taking screen shots.

If you are using a Windows based system you can get a screen shot simply by hitting the "Print Screen" key. This grabs an image of your full screen. Then in Photoshop do Ctrl+N (File-New), you will get a new blank image the size of your monitor. Ctrl+V (Edit-Paste) will paste the captured image into the Photoshop image area perfectly and you can manipulate it as you wish.

On a Mac
Type Command+Shift+3 to take a screen shot which is saved within the startup drive or system folder.

Depending on your OS version these two alternatives may also work:
Type Command+Shift+4 for crosshairs you can use to select a portion of your display, once you release the mouse the picture will be taken.

Additionally, you can hit the spacebar after typing Command-Shift-4. Instead of crosshairs, you'll get a camera. Move the camera around to highlight any open window. Then click the mouse button to take a screen shot.

Re: Screen Shot...

And to add.... Alt + Print Screen on a windows machine will take a "snapshot" of the active window. Handy in that you don't have to cut off your start bar, etc...

Photoshop Gradients

In Photoshop's Gradient Editor (click current gradient swatch) there is a 'Smoothness' slider. Set to Zero, this gives a linear gradient. The default Foreground to Background and Black to White use a 100 smoothness setting which applies an S-curve. (Thus more left and right than middle pixels in the Histo).

Personally, i've always found more uses for a linear gradation than a contrived one so either redefine the smoothness value of the defaults (or set up alternatives) using Zero.

Just thought it might be worth a mention for those not aware of the option...?

Re: Photoshop Gradients

Glenn,

Aha! That's probably what was involved in the other "mystery".

Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention.

Best regards,

Doug
