Problem with 10D and Sandisk Ultra CF

Hi
I recently returned my Canon 10D for a replacement and upon using my old Sandisk CF Ultra 512 card in the new camera for the first time I noticed that the folder number had jumped from 107 to 899. Anyone any idea why? and secondly when the folder reaches 999 does this then make the card unusable, if so the jump is a real problem. Any help appreciated.

Mark

I think it keeps the folder data from your other camera in the card. If you other camera was at folder 888, then 889 would be created by the 10D. I think if format the card, it will go back? I could be wrong - I think this was discussed here the first week the 10D was in the hands of the public.

PS: I do know that the card will not be rendered useless after folder 999. It starts over.

Re: Problem with 10D and Sandisk Ultra CF

Well at small apertures I had half a dozen spots, looked like grease marks visible against light backgrounds. At wider apertures they faded away. Same for all lenses. I rang my supplier up who happily exchanged it. He said that there was a fault with the sensor, one of three they'd had so far. Having read some bullitin boards however the opinion is that it was just a dirty sensor. This is my first digital so I'm in a position of ignorance.

Back to the original problem, it jumped straight from 107 to 899 and I've formatted within the camera and it still shows folder 899.

Formatting the CF will not change the camera's counter.

You need to reset the counter by selecting the non-continuous numbering option in the menu.
(you will go back to 101)

Let me guess... Your previous camera was a D30, and you had wrapped the odometer around, right? My 10D did this too.

I think the D30 had a bug in which the highest numbered image you could ever get was IMG_9900, then it wrapped back to the start. I'll bet it left the folder out there, and the 10D (without the bug) picked it up and decided to continue the numbering.

This is just a guess.
