5D MKII go with non-Canon flash?

I'm about to purchase a 5D MKII but will need an on camera flash for weddings, indoors and such. Are after market flashes (Bower, Vivatar....)good to go with or should I pay the premium price of a Canon flash. For years I've used an SB800 with my Nikon outfit and would like a comparable flash for the Canon. An suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: 5D MKII go with non-Canon flash?

The short version: for on-camera use, you will probably want to stick with a Canon EX flash unit. The main issue here is metering. For purely off-camera flash units, a different story.

This all gets a bit complex. You should carefully read up on Canon's approach to flash metering before throwing your money around. You might start here.

Re: 5D MKII go with non-Canon flash?

For years I have used Metz flashes. Every now & then I get the Canon one & am always disappointed with the result. I end up selling the Canon.

Recently I bought a Canon 580II & 2 PW TT5s. Out of each 5 shots with the 580II only 3 were acceptable (no PWs). So I go back to the Metz 58AF-1 or the big Metz 45CL-4 digital handle flash & get a perfect exposure EVERY time. So I've returned the 580II & ordered a Metz 58AF-2.
