Kevin, I agree with the others and with Chuck, take your camera in when you have time. "Brick" means that your camera might seize up completely if you were to do a firmware upgrade. Then, Canon will have to replace a board or chip or something to get it functional again. That is the meaning of "brick."

This is very likely a hardware issue as you noted that you have the latest firmware installed. Just take it in for servicing when you can.

Re: 5D: Previews acting funny

As an example, user Dave_C on a different board wrote the following:

Canon Digital Photography Forums - View Single Post - 40D Firmware from 1.0.3 to 1.0.5

Quote:
Flashing my new 40D turned it into a brick. I had to send it to Canon and they had to replace main board on it.

And then, Dave_C noted that his camera was covered under warranty:
Canon Digital Photography Forums - View Single Post - 40D Firmware from 1.0.3 to 1.0.5

Again, long story short, bring your camera in for service when you can.

Re: 5D: Previews acting funny

Thanks Kevin,
ok wont bother with the firmware idea. I'ts not so much the repair cost that annoys me, but the long wait.
I just called CPS, and they have a profit/price structure that is quite hideous.

Re: 5D: Previews acting funny

I am unsure if you are pro. You mentioned that you don't shoot that much but that the long wait is bothersome.

If you are a pro, you might find the following information helpful:

Canon USA Consumer Products

The CPS program is available to full-time working professional photographers that meet the membership level requirements of equipment ownership and business. This program offers three levels of membership - Silver, Gold and Platinum - to qualifying members, with each level receiving better and more extensive benefits. Please review the membership overview chart and the requirements and benefits listed below.

You might find the turnaround time and service loaner helpful. I don't qualify for CPS membership, so I am unsure if the information contained in the link remains accurate etc.

Because your camera is new and (relatively unused?), I hope it is still covered by warranty. I *believe* that the Canon service center is in Irvine. The few times I needed my equipment serviced, I went in person to our Canon repair center in Calgary. I found the people receptive and easy to deal with. You might wish to speak to the Canon folks in person.

Re: 5D: Previews acting funny

Chuck W.
I sent the body into Canon, but unlike the last 5 years, it wont go CPS.
I am totally infuriated with Canon:
