Canon EOS 5D MkII Autofocus - Unhappy 5D MkII Users Speak Out
It's no secret that Canon has autofocus problems with it's DSLR digital cameras. Whether it's persistent soft focus, out of focus, or back focus, Canon can't seem to get it's autofocus system to work properly in its DSLR lineup. Canon 5D MkII owners are finding the 5D MkII is no different.

To be honest, Canon's AF to me is fine. After shooting a Phase one back on a AFDII and AFDIII, the AF on a Canon is great.
Only consistent issue for me (1ds MKI and MKII, 5D and 5D MKII) is at
time, a low light issue which seems to be a tad worse on my 5D's. However any other situation the AF is tack on. No back focus issues.
True also with AI Servo Mode with my experience.

Yes, it is no secret. As a matter of fact, it's old news; very old news, which includes the history of how Canon has dealt with it in a very forthright manner. As a matter of fact, I think the real news was how Canon DID deal with it in a very forthright manner, which I think received far less coverage of it than the fact that there were some issues with the AF.
This forum is full of those issues, and the way Chuck Westfall has responded to them in a helpful and forthright manner.
Please. Go away.

It's no secret that you have something against Canon, Matt.
It's been my experience that only particularly dense people can't find focus with Canon cameras. I was shooting sports with my Canon D30 with maybe 1 or 2 OOF shots per game, and they've gotten nothing but better since. I haven't had a Canon body fail to focus on anything I have tried for a long, long time. So no, Canon does not have focus problems. You have the problem.
I once worked with a guy at a software company who was pro Unix and rabidly anti PC. I'm not talking the kind of Unix Apple has under the covers, but dyed in the wool Unix - the kind you compiled yourself before installing on your computer. The guy often actually wore a pith hat and khakis, and signed every eMail with something about Bill Gates being Evil or "Live Free or Die". It was really no surprise then that he was unable to get any useful work done between crashes and problems with his PC, while the rest of us had our systems working just fine and did plenty of good software engineering.

Amen to that. I've still got my 10D which was supposed to be a focus disaster area. Never had an issue with it, got lots of sharp images out of it too.
Mike.

Re: Canon EOS 5D MkII Autofocus - Unhappy 5D MkII Users Speak Out
Well I concur with Matt, since my 18month old 40d died on me I have had to use
my 5dmk2 for motorcycle sports. I have had autofocus issues here is one example, Now I dont know if you guys know or have heard
of the Isle of Man TT but is the most extreme of Motorcycle racing, Racing at up to
190mph plus on streets on a 37-3/4 mile course upto six laps thats over 226 miles per race. anyway anarea called ballacrye which is a straight preceded by a corner they are coming at you at around 150 to 160mph feet away both wheels a couple of feet of the ground as they go over arise in the road. Three professional photographers
shooting the bike as they come towards you, I have a canon 5dmk2 with 70-200 f2.8 is, the other canon shooter has a 1dmk3
with 2.8 300 L lens and one guy has a nikon d300 with vr lens dont know details on that. Both us canon shooters were getting lots of out of focus shots whilst the
Nikon shooter had a very high percentage of in focus shots. We compared shots
when we were waiting for the roads to open after the race and the Nikon's autofocus
was way better than either of the Canon's. and no it was nothing to do with shutter speed etc, both of the canon shooters had tried various shutter speeds with no
improvement in number of keepers.
At others meetings thoughout Europe this year I have seen similiar issues with
Canon shooters not getting the same success rate as Nikon shooters
so dont shoot the messenger, the Canon Autofocus system is not as good
as Nikon. Now having said that I didnt buy the 5dmk2 for motorsport I had to use
it as my 40d proved to be an unreliable piece of dirt. I have to say that when
it does get something in focus the results are stunning.
However at least twice there was a 1dmk3 shooter alongside me and their autofocus was not as good as semi-pro
nikon cameras. Now if I had a 1dmk3 I would be unhappy.
