Ever since I replaced my EOS 5 film camera with the 10D (1.6 crop), I've really missed getting wide. Better now I have a 1D3 but still my 20-35 f2.8L isn't really wide enough. And I can't afford a 14L (and in combination with the 1D3 gives a horizontal angle of view(HAV) of 86 deg) so research showed that I could use a EF-S 10-22 by modifying the lens plastic base. It's been done
here.
So I bit the bullet & bought a 10-22, removed the plastic base, modified a base from an old EF lens & installed it on the 10-22.
It's fantastic. Can't go wider than 11mm or else the mirror hits the rear lens element & you get corner cutoff wider than 12mm. So I've installed limiters so 12mm is mechanical limit. This gives a HAV of 100 degrees.
There are some pics of what I did here:
1st pic is the underside of the "new" base showing the limit lugs that stop the lens going wider than 12mm.
2nd pic is the "new" base installed on the lens
3rd pic is the lens as bought.
4th pic is the 10-22 on my 1D3.
I found that there was a a slight occlusion in the bottom right hand corner at 12mm & determined that it was the lenshood that was interfering. So I ground about 0.5mm off the hood at the corners & that's now fixed.
There's a gallery of images taken with the 10-22 on the 1D3
