File creation issue on 5DMkII for Chuck W

I always shoot with the capture set to RAW + small jpg. Until recently, all was fine. Last week I had a strange problem come up while shooting where for 16 frames, in the middle of the shoot, the camera only produced jpgs, and instead of the usual file naming protocol _MG, it named these files IMG. Then it went back to the normal file creation of RAW+ jpg, using the _MG file naming.

Any idea of what happened here? I lost some images I care about, and certainly don't want it to happen again.

Hi, Allen:

One thing that could cause the behavior you describe would be if the mode dial on top of the camera was inadvertently switched into or out of one of the Custom modes (C1, C2 or C3), depending on how you have the camera set up. The Custom modes let you designate many settings including color space and image quality. Your Custom settings may have been different than your standard settings in other exposure modes.

Re: File creation issue on 5DMkII for Chuck W

That may in fact be what happened. I was on location that day, and had the camera turned on as I was walking through the site. Most of the time, I had the camer in my hand as I was walking, but at other times, I slung it over my shoulder. I did notice at one point that the camera was not on Tv and had to switch it back. It sounds like it may have been pilot error.

Thanks for the quick response, and the diagnosis. Much appreciated. BTW, any more news on extra batteries yet? I know you mentioned in reply to my post a while back that production was ramping up, but I haven't seen anything come through at the stores yet.

More LP-E6 batteries have shipped in the past 8 weeks, and many more are on the way from the factory. However, there is still a hefty backorder situation which will take some time to resolve. Part of the issue now is that some dealers are stockpiling more than usual due to the high level of customer demand.
