| Re: Canon scanners - Canon 1V I don't know if it applies in this particular case, as I don't know the age of your scanners, but I've had EXACTLY these kinds of problems in the past with scanners - both Canon and other big names.
There's no direct commercial reward in updating drivers for older hardware on newer operating systems. The better companies tend to do some of this kind of thing, but if you're not finding a driver for a modern OS on a scanner that's a few years old, but perfectly good otherwise... You may well be out of luck.
I have a number of flatbed scanners that I've accumulated over the years. All were in perfect working order and all became obsolete when the manufacturers failed to update the drivers for newer OS releases.
In my own particular case I doubled the fun in that I embraced the 64 bit architecture (XP x64 and now Vista x64). Whatever budget the manufacturers have for driver software, it's clear only a minority of it is allocated to 64 bit support.
What I could never quite understand was why it is necessary to have a low-level driver for things like scanners. I guess it's because the industry never standardized on a communications protocol that was device-independent. Still, a maker could do such a thing with their own product line and yet few or none seem to do it.
Think about it: They sell more new scanners if they don't update the drivers.
I suppose this just proves that marketing people should never be given full control of company policy.
