Richard,
I think that you've cracked the nub of the problem.
I looked at the mirror assembly in my 1D3 when it's locked up & it's quite different.
It's very smooth with no sharp edges, all rounded & all mat black. It couldn't reflect anything even if it wanted to!!!
Time for some talk by Chuck with his friends in Japan.

Re: 5DMkII reflections in picture

Good Work Richard, I think it's safe to assume all 5D MKIIs have this design. I wonder if the change is due to the video mode?

I am wondering if my issue with the red flare is due to this or something else as your images show a more rectangular look to the reflection, where as mine was oval.

Interesting that more people haven't seen this and raised up an issue with Canon like the black dot issue.

This very well might not have a quick fix.

Yes, I can't believe no-one else has noticed it. It's affecting about 33% of my shots. I was looking over some random snaps I was taking the other weekend and now I know what I'm looking for, most of them have it in due to bright objects (eg doorframes) just out of shot.

For me, this is a very serious issue.

Hi, Richard:

The strip you're referring to is not shiny on my sample of the 5D Mark II. It appears to be made of the same black felt-type material as the corresponding strip on the original 5D. Let me pass along your report to our Service Department to see if they have any comments.

Thanks Chuck, much appreciated.

I have yet to contact Canon UK, as yesterday was 'one of those days', as is today by the looks of it
