Re: The Nature of USM focusing

Fed-EX dropped off the camera about an hour ago. I went out in the street with the 16-35II and rattled off 77 shots @ f2.8 panning rather rapidly. Not too scientific but all shots were 100% in focus using AI servo and the ring of fire. So far so good. I'll know more after my hike this weekend.

Re: The Nature of USM focusing

Just FYI, I was way more impressed with the el cheapo 50mm f/1.8 than with the "higher quality" 50mm f/1.4 I replaced it with.

I shot some stars with it at f/1.4 and was absolutely appalled with the results.

Not Canon's best lens for sure.

Re: The Nature of USM focusing

Do you think it was inaccurate focusing, or other factors like fringing? I wouldn't think it would be adequate for an astro lens, and that likely was not a design goal for it.

We decided to order the Zeiss ZE 50mm 1.4. I'm sure the Canon 1.8 is a good lens, but the environment is a rigorous one and I think the Zeiss is the way to go.

Re: The Nature of USM focusing

Got the 1DsIII back yesterday, (great and speedy Canon service), and the Zeiss lens arrived last week. Tests will be flown as soon as the weather improves a bit.
