Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Noel, Doug et al,
I bought 2 focus confirmation chips on EBay a couple of years ago.
The 1st I use on a Canon EOS to FD converter. It tells the camera that there's a 55mm lens in use and that it has a f1.4 aperture. The lens I use is a new FD 500 f4.5.
The 2nd I use on my Hartblei 45mm f3.5 T&S MF lens.
Both have accurate focus confirmation & with the 1D3 I can select which focus point I like & it confirms correctly.

I found a newer version of this chip on EBay just now.

Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Thanks for the link. I just ordered one. I'd love to be able to use some of my older Nikon wide angle glass on an infrared converted 30d with focus confirmation. It looks like this may do it... and allow for custom focus tuning as well. I already have an adapter w/o the chip. We'll see...

Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Back to the original Center-flare topic... I have experienced this myself, see below. 5DMkII, 24-70 f2.8 L lens @ 70mm with Hoya Pro UV filter on.

Click <here> for full-size image with Exif data.

As you can see, it's very obvious in the JPG, but not at all present through the viewfinder.

I am also getting other sorts of problems with 'something' in the picture, I'll post separately on that, as it looks like a reflection of something inside the camera.

Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Richard, did removal of the filter resolve the issue?

When I my shots that had the effect, I had a CL-PL on. I have yet to get back to try to see if I still get the effect without a filter.

You are getting the exact same thing I got with the same lens.

Most interesting.

Hi Paul, no news yet. My first attempt at reproducing this under scientific conditions (with filter on) didn't manage to do it, and since then I have been doing other things.

More experiments needed for sure.

Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Paul,

I had a thought - when I was playing to see what generated my problems, I decided to switch to Live-View mode since I could not see the problem through the viewfinder. A bit of waving the camera around soon showed up the problem. Maybe next time you are in a similar lighting situation, you can mess about with using live-view to see if the flare shows up on the screen then - you might be able to make the flare move about dependant on camera angles to the scenery.
