Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

I have fit the Zoerk to the MKII and fired a few frames, no problem with the mirror, however focus was a big problem.

It seems that the Zoerk I have allows the lens attached to focus past infinity and getting a true sharp focus has been hard for me. I am using the Zoerk for P645 and the Pentax 35mm FA lens, which is one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used. I tried the same setup on my older 1ds MKII which is the main camera I have used the Zoerk on, and no focus problems.

I also tried a Contax 28mm F2.8 and 50mm 1.4 and both also seemed to have issues with the 5D MKII on focus. This was with a cameraquest adapter.

The other thing I noted was that the Contax lenses seemed to throw the exposure metering off, not sure what was happening.

I am also seeing some vignetting issues with many lenses on the 5D MKII, Canon and non Canon from 35mm and wider. Not sure why I would be seeing this since the 5D MKII is full frame same as the 1ds MKII.

Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Is there no way to do manual focus and have the camera bee-beep when it thinks you've got it spot on? As I recall there was something in the telescope arena that allowed this...

Hi, Noel:

The 5D Mark II and all other EOS cameras will provide focus confirmation in manual focus with EF lenses, but not with non-coupled lenses.

It has been conjectured that a reason for this limitation is that the EOS body needs to know at least the focal length of the lens to properly "tune up" the focus detection system, even for use only for focus confirmation.

Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Someone in the astronomy world has created an adapter with circuitry that "couples up" the camera so that it will provide focus confirmation. I think I also once saw some kind of adapter for Nikon lenses (on Canon bodies) with similar characteristics...

Had to go look, as it's been a while since I saw these things... Ah, here is some info:

Starstruck Equipment - FotoSharp

Nikon AI to Canon EOS

Re: 5D MKII Strange Center Flare Question for Chuck W and others

Focus confirmation adapters have been available for non-eos lenses on ebay and other adapter providers for some time. Ebay Link

I can remember a kit someone put together a couple of years ago to modify existing adapters. I've never tried any of these, but according to reports, they work acceptably.

Yes, I had recalled seeing something about that on some forum or another, but couldn't remember the details.

Thanks for bringing me up-to-date.

Doug
