Not happy with Adobe

This does relate to my new 5d MKII.
I use "Adobe" PS CS3 and and "Adobe" Lightroom 2.0 for everything. Now, I know that there are post in other forums about this issue but I thought it would be best posted here just in case anyone is wanting to buy this camera. I love the camera and have no issues with it whatsoever. But, in order to work with the raw files, an update is needed for Lightroom 2.0 to ver. 2.2. Version 2.2 suckes up all of my memory and eventually crashes my PC. OK, so I thought I would use Photoshop CS3 and Bridge to work on said RAW files. Nope, it is not an update but you have to upgrade to CS4 in order to work on RAW files. Meaning another $199. I got into a chat room with a representative about the issues and all he wanted to do was send me the link to the upgrade website. The chat is posted below. Now am I just too pissed off to see clearly or is this BS?

Please hold as we route your chat to an Adobe Representative.
Welcome to Adobe.com! My name is Ralph. May I assist you with your selection today?
Ralph: Hello, how can I help you?
Terry: Hello Ralph
Terry: I have two huge issues.
Ralph: Hi Terry,
Ralph: It's my pleasure to help you.
Ralph: Can I please know your concern?
Terry: CS3 is what I am using now. I have bought a new 5dmkII and raw files will not work
Terry: do i have to upgrade to cs4?
Ralph: I'll be happy to help you with that.
Ralph: May I know to which product or bundle of CS3 version you are referring to?
Terry: adobe photoshop
Ralph: Are you referring to Adobe Photoshop CS4?
Terry: y
Terry: hello?
Ralph: I recommend you to upgrade to Photoshop CS4.
Ralph: Photoshop CS4 supports RAW files.
Ralph: You can upgrade from Photoshop CS3 to Photoshop CS4 for US $199.
Ralph: Would you like to place an order online now?
Terry: only $199, I would think that should be an update not an upgrade
Ralph: I am sorry, It is an upgrade.
Ralph: Shall I give you the direct link to place the order?
Terry: this is a huge concern among other photographer, the forums are filling up with pissed off people
Terry: I also use LR 2.0 and upgraded to 2.2 and it sucks up all of my memory
Terry: another issue that is filling up forum around the world
Terry: adobe is making this difficult
Ralph: With Photoshop CS4 you can enjoy superior conversion quality as you process raw images with the industry-leading Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 5 plug-in, which now offers localized corrections, post-crop vignetting, TIFF and JPEG processing, and support for more than 190 camera models.
Terry: again that should be an update
Terry: what about lightroom 2.0 to 2.2?
Ralph: Please click here.
Terry: you are not much help
Ralph: If you place an order with Photoshop CS4 for Lightroom2 you will get 30% off on Lightroom2.
Terry: i already have lightroom 2.0
Terry: the update to 2.2 crashes my computer
Terry: the update is what i need to look at my raw files
Ralph: Photoshop CS4 supports RAW files.
Ralph: Please click here to view the features.
Ralph: Did you get the link?
Terry: can i chat with someone else who is concerned about customer service?
Ralph: I am concerned about your concern.
Ralph: It's my pleasure to help a valued customer like you.
Terry: You are more concerned about sending me a ling to spend $199 that I think I shouldn't have to do.
Terry: link
Terry: I believe I may post this chat in the next forum I come to
Ralph: May I know, how I can help you?
Terry: You have been of no help whatsoever

Re: Not happy with Adobe

Why blame Adobe? I understand your need to vent but let's be realistic here. You bought a camera that has just been released to the public. It will take a while until Camera Raw updates are made available. Until then, Canon has provided you software to decode the RAW files so that they can be used in Photoshop.

Of course Adobe wants you to upgrade Photoshop to the latest version. That is why they develop RAW updates for the most recent version first. Photoshop CS4 is well worth the upgrade. Bite the bullet and buy the upgrade.

Re: Not happy with Adobe

Why? So far I haven't found any answers to the Lightroom delema. Yea, I will eventually upgrage but given the amount of $$$ spent so far on Adobe LR and CS3 and I have recieved ZERO support. These programs were not purchased years ago but less than a year and are obsolete for RAW files. I would rather not use the software that comes with the camera. Did you not read the chat?

I read the chat, you were apparently speaking to a customer service representative instead of technical support.

Re: Not happy with Adobe

Yep, that was my thought as well, Jerry. The OP wasn't talking to the right Adobe people for the problem he had.

Naturally a CS rep is going to push an upgrade solution and likely doesn't have the technical expertise to field questions about software crashes.

Re: Not happy with Adobe

Can we expect Camera raw 4 or earlier updates to handle new cameras? Specifically 5D Mark II in CS3? That's not a given.

At some point Adobe certainly will say, "well, if you want new camera support you have to buy new software."

Re: Not happy with Adobe

I agree with Terry. This is not a new software issue, it is a new hardware issue. CS3 and LR are recent enough upgrades that they should support a new camera with an update. It could be they haven't got around to it as yet.

Also, it is obvious that you were not talking to the right person. And, I'd bet it was some guy in India whose only function is to sell upgrades.

In the meantime, it appears that the only option may be the Canon furnished software. This has been the case in the past with both Nikon and Canon.

Patience, Terry. It'll work out. It always does.
