Re: Not happy with Adobe

Almost seemed like an AI program answering those questions, frankly. About 5% as good as talking to a native English speaker. And quite likely not technically oriented at all.

He did connect you with the Adobe sales pages quickly (and repeatedly). I imagine they think he does a good job.

That said, you did pay for a camera upgrade, Terry. Is there a reason you would think you'd not need to pay for a software upgrade to stay on the cutting edge too?

That one is easy. YES! I feel that I shouldn't have to pay extra for for an upgrade on software I believe should already do the job. All I need is for CS3 to be able to read my RAW files, that's it! Go to the Adobe CS4 website and read about all of the bells and whistles that come with CS4, I do not need all of that. I do sports, weddings, and portraits as a second job. I know, I know...After spending $$$ on the 5D MKII, 3 batteries, and the grip $199 seem like nothing, to some.

I also use lightroom 2.0 and the new update 2.2 is for compatibility to the new 5D, but there are issues with memory drain for some including me. Adobe offered it as an update with LR why not PS too?

As far as the Adobe rep is concerned, I ask for help the he could not provide. Nor did he send me to someone who could help. I would always expect that.

Re: Not happy with Adobe

If you can't get Lightroom to work correctly yet, download the latest DNG converter (v5.2 free download) and convert your raw files to DNG. You should then be able to open these just fine using ACR in CS3. I haven't done it with that specific camera but I've used the same technique with other raw files not supported by older versions of ACR. That at least gives you support until a better option comes along... like a Lightroom fix that helps you. I don't recall Adobe ever offering new camera support to older versions of ACR. I wouldn't be pinning too many hopes on seeing that.

They do offer it for the current version of Photoshop (CS4). They don't offer it for previous versions of Photoshop just as they don't offer it for the previous version of Lightroom (v1.x).

Re: Not happy with Adobe

If you bought a new car with a different size set of tires and you didn't like the tires, would you expect another tire company to give you a set of free tires?
Sorry not much symphpathy here from someone who has every version going back to version 3. No different from new cars.

Re: Not happy with Adobe

Personally I think Adobe has set some precedents in the past that might lead us to believe they should support new cameras in updates of old software - at least in the next-to-newest version. This business of releasing a new .0 release every 18 months with a few new features, just to rake in the $$$ is indeed a bit tiring.

However, it is reality. There has been a gradual shift from "buy it once and use it forever" to "get it on subscription", and I don't just mean in software. I mean, c'mon, a new camera body every year or so? And why can't the files be set up so that newer versions are compatible with older software? Where is it written that the raw format has to be redesigned for every new model?

Why, for example, don't camera makers use the Adobe DNG format?

Why won't Camera Raw 5 plug into CS3?

Answer: They WANT your stuff to become obsolete, so you'll buy more.

Get your wallet out. It's the only solution. Adobe's representative in India (or wherever) as shown in the post that started this thread has made this quite clear!

Re: Not happy with Adobe

Pukkita's Digital Darkroom Corner

Here is another option. No graphics but works great. batches well. very fast conversions once it is setup.
