"Firmware Update Version 1.0.7 improves and mitigates the following two types of image quality phenomena that occur under certain shooting conditions.

1. "Black dot" phenomenon (the right side of point light sources become black)
2. Vertical banding noise"

Looks like the firmware really does fix the problem, and in the raw data, so no matter the user's workflow the problem is gone.

This is good news indeed for astrophotographers and anyone who shoots images that contain bright point light sources with a Canon EOS-5D Mark II.

Hi Noel,

It says "improves and mitigates" as opposed to "removes"... so I'm not counting my chickens..

I'm going to Vegas for CES tomorrow so I'll update it and see over the weekend, BUT... I'm still in the "it wasnt a problem in the first place camp" I took about 1000 shots over Christmas, indoor, outdoor, differnet conditions... sure some images had them.. but I'm not doing stuff where a 200% crop defect is "significant" I guess that means I might have well stayed with my 10D (6MP for the non old timers) BUT I spent about 80% of that time shooting at ISO 3200 which was unheard of in the 10D....

If shooting at 3200 is "signal" and black dots is "noise" I'm at 1000:1...

The banding is different. that I did see... here and there...

If anyone else is at CES I'll be manning the "Esoteric Audio Research" booth..(Venetian) incase you have a spare $20k you want to offload on sweet sounding tube amps...

Here's one test of the new firmware. Looks like it solves the black dot issue.

My body was delivered with v 1.0.6. Believe I'm going to wait for some additional early adopter reports since I'm not being adversely affected by this issue.
