Re: Canon 5D MKII Video Mode Review Discussion

Thanks for the info Paul.

Looks like I may wind up building a new desktop. I've priced out a "basic" core i7 with 6gb ram and 2 raid 0 configurations for around $1,200 from newegg including a new copy of vista 64.

It is either that, or a 24" imac after the announcements come out on the 6th. If there are any.

Re: Canon 5D MKII Video Mode Review Discussion

Regarding the stuttering/ freezing when panning issue I found a thread on dpreview earlier, yeah I know. But, I stuck my nose in over there, and it looks like this guy may have found a clue as to the root cause.

It appears it may be happening when the aperture changes during the pan. Don't know if it would also happen when not panning, as there is not as much information being processed then.

Can anyone here confirm this? I am out of town and will not have access to a 5D mkii for a while.

Here is the thread: Has anyone noticed video stutter? (5D2 samples): Canon EOS-1D / 1Ds / 5D Forum: Digital Photography Review

Re: Canon 5D MKII Video Mode Review Discussion

One more thing of note regarding video editing.

I have not been able to get Premiere Pro, or Vegas to work well with this footage without transcoding first and losing quality.

However, I thought I would throw out that the very basic cyberlink power director (<$100) seems to import them and play them fairly well on the pc. I haven't spent much time with this program, but some may wish to give the trial a go. It seems simple, but able to do some basic editing easily (kind of like an imovie). However, the best export option seems to be 1920x1080i in an AVCHD format. I haven't found any way to get 1920x1080p out of this little editor.

Just an update on the freezing.

It does appear that the aperture change is causing this behavior, Mike Chaney, the author of qimage has confirmed in the above linked thread, as well as a gentleman in Germany.
