When I first started with the operation, they had a 24-105, (zoom taped at 50mm), on a 1Ds Mk III. I offered my 50mm 1.4. Apparently the reason they used the zoom was because everything was still experimental, and they were trying various focal lengths at various altitudes. One day, after the tape loosened up, and ruined a whole shoot, they took my 50mm, and that's what's on it now. There's still a lot of it under evaluation, so it's not unlikely that other focal lengths will be tried.
It was apparent early on that the stabilization was not going to work properly aimed directly downward, (that was another reason for trying the 24-105). It's on a gimballed mount that pans at exactly the right angular speed to avoid ground motion blur. Seems to be working great.
