Thanks for sending me the raw file Paul.
I'm afraid I can see no problem whatsoever with the image, having opened it through Adobe Camera Raw version 4.4.1 and DPP version 3.4.1.1.
I looked all along the left side and see nothing but the occasional white tiny portion of a branch or stick that's reflecting white, all having the same slight chromatic aberration as the surroundings.
Here are unresized crops from the left side, about 2/3 up from the bottom, from DPP and from Camera Raw with a little CA correction dialed in, and with NO sharpening from either tool. I just don't see anything amiss with this image in this section, save for actual specular highlights.
At this point I'd heed what Dennis is suggesting: You may be sharpening the images overmuch and seeing artifacts from that. Neither the DPP nor Camera Raw sharpening functions are amongst the best in the field.

Camera Raw:
Do these look significantly different from what you're seeing?
You might want to try a prime lens with that beast. The 16-35 II is good, but is still delivering some aberrations that are not easy to overcome digitally (look right in the corners). Your DOF is a bit shallow in this shot as well; just guessing here, but you may have focused in too closely or used too large an aperture.
