Re: White square pixels all over my cr2 conversions?

Paul, please post a full raw file online somewhere. I'd like to see what you're seeing as well. Is the first image you posted above an excerpt from one of your conversions, without further processing? It looks like a "paint by numbers" board!

The second image doesn't really look like a "hot pixel" per se. It has chromatic aberration similar to that seen elsewhere in the image, so I'd say that one in particular is from light that's been through your lens.

I can't think of anything in general that would both show bright pixels and make the image muddy, but it isn't hard to imagine a defect in digital processing doing pretty much anything under the sun to an image. At this point, from the first image you showed above, it sure does look like you have a defect somewhere in your system.

Re: White square pixels all over my cr2 conversions?

Lets see if this one will upload. This jpg is the best Pro foto will let me upload. The CR2 file is ~26mb and the forum only handles 16mb cr2s, or 800X800 jpg.
I'll try to yousendit.
Most of it shows up in the tree on the left side about 2/3rd up from the bottom

Re: White square pixels all over my cr2 conversions?

Thanks for sending me the raw file Paul.

I'm afraid I can see no problem whatsoever with the image, having opened it through Adobe Camera Raw version 4.4.1 and DPP version 3.4.1.1.

I looked all along the left side and see nothing but the occasional white tiny portion of a branch or stick that's reflecting white, all having the same slight chromatic aberration as the surroundings.

Here are unresized crops from the left side, about 2/3 up from the bottom, from DPP and from Camera Raw with a little CA correction dialed in, and with NO sharpening from either tool. I just don't see anything amiss with this image in this section, save for actual specular highlights.

At this point I'd heed what Dennis is suggesting: You may be sharpening the images overmuch and seeing artifacts from that. Neither the DPP nor Camera Raw sharpening functions are amongst the best in the field.

DPP:

Camera Raw:

Do these look significantly different from what you're seeing?

You might want to try a prime lens with that beast. The 16-35 II is good, but is still delivering some aberrations that are not easy to overcome digitally (look right in the corners). Your DOF is a bit shallow in this shot as well; just guessing here, but you may have focused in too closely or used too large an aperture.

Re: White square pixels all over my cr2 conversions?

I see several in the camera raw. approx: Bottom 1/3 from left 10% up. 30% from left, 30% up. 55% from left, 50% up. 45% from left, 85% up. take them up to about 300% and look at the clusters of pixels. This occurs with my 50 f/1.4 also. What bothers me is all of my lenses show the clusters in the same place on the image. I ran these on several vidio cards and monitors with different computers. Some images show it more than others but they all have it in the same places.
Look higher up on the left side in the green area.
I just looked over my 100mm macro again and find the same white clusters in the same positions.

Re: White square pixels all over my cr2 conversions?

Hi Paul,

I hate to ask you to do this, but if you could send me another different image I'll be happy to look for light spots are in the same places.

I don't doubt you are seeing something, but I just see all the light spots in this one image appear to have the same aberrations as the other parts of the image (e.g., blurring and chromatic aberration), which tells me they're in the subject material.

With two images, I'll be able to blink back and forth and see anything that stays put.
