I'm a newbie to Canon, I love my 1Ds MkIII and need a second body mainly for backup. Is the 5D the next model down in full frame and do you recommend it?

Highly.
I can't afford the MkIII, so I bought a 1Ds as a backup for my 5D. I have not used the MkIII, so I can't directly compare it with the 5D, but I expect you'll notice minimal IQ difference with the 5D.
I predict you'll use it more than you think.
I took mine soaring with me a few weeks ago with the FishEye 15mm.

One difference, I've been told, is that the 5D does not have the weather sealing that the 1Ds series has. I could be wrong, though.
Of course there are a lot of differences, and weather sealing is one of them. The autofocus is not as fast either. The 5D costs a third of what the 1Ds II / III cost, so this is logical. The 5D is indeed a good back-up camera for the 1Ds II or 1Ds III, but it is obviously not completely in the same league.
The 5D is a superb camera and produces amazing files. Having used 1D MkII, 1DS MkII and 1D MkIII bodies, my favourite files come from the 5D.
As mentioned its no where near as tough or quick as the 1D series bodies, but if you don't work in harsh environments or need the speed, then I can't recommend it highly enough. Also the smaller size is liberating!
One word of warning though; its replacement is long overdue (which is why they're so cheap now), so if you're not in a rush, it may be worth waiting to see what that might be like. I have no info on this other than the normal product cycle dictating this.
The 1DSIII and 5D make a great combo.
Great shot Dennis! Where do you fly sailplanes from? It doesen't resemble the old Blaniks I used to fly.

Actually, I'm a newbie to soaring, after a 40 year career as a commercial pilot. I've recently starting towing, and this was my intro to the Grob. The club also has two Blaniks in Byron, northern Calif.
I wouldn't have dreamed of taking the 1Ds for this, so the comment that the 5D is liberating is true.
