Aftermarket 1D batteries

Not to open up a can of worms here, but I need to replace my original set of batteries. I have both the Canon and some aftermarket brands... I've had good luck with both.

My question is... For all you that have used the aftermarket brands, which one of the many have you had the best luck with? Which brand should I stay away from? I've read a few threads on this and I'd like more info...

Thanks,
Larry

Re: Aftermarket 1D batteries

Larry,

I have an Impact (IMNPE3) that I got from B & H and I would not recommend it. It looks as though it ought to work fine, but there is something not quite perfect about the sizing such that the latch does not work the way the OEM ones do.

I just bought a spare battery for my MKIII and bought a Canon one without any hesitation.

If you can wait, I suspect that there will be a lot of secondhand batteries out there as people move on to the MKIIIs and their different batteries.

David.

Re: Aftermarket 1D batteries

Hey John,
Thanks for the link... Unfortunately, they don't have a battery for the 1D, i think they have batteries for the 10D, 20D series. They told me to try Newegg, which has a 3rd party battery replacement.

I googled NP-E3 and got a plethora of sites that sell it. The question is which of those aftermarket batteries perform the best? It seems like there have been a varying results, myself included.

Thanks again,
Larry

Try the energizer, you can buy it from amazon, I own it and no problems. Fits well and with amazon.com they will back what they sell for any reason.

Sean,
Thanks for your advice... I didn't know that. I'll have to keep that in mind when I do order some more batteries.

Cheers,
Larry

Re: Aftermarket 1D batteries

Hi Larry,

I bought 2 of the Black Diamond NP-E3 batteries from Mydigitaldiscount.com and have basically been satisfied with them. The batteries are guaranteed for a year and are bargain priced at $22.99. I found that the batteries last so long on a single charge (both the aftermarket and the original Canons) that I decided to only use one of the black diamond batteries and rotate it with the Canon, leaving the 2nd one in the wrapper.

After about 11 months I forgot the battery in the charger overnight (which you would not think would hurt it, but ironically the MkIIN manual says not to leave batteries in the charger after charging is complete). After that I found that the battery was not holding the charge nearly as long. I called the reseller, and the battery was replaced with no questions asked. I unwrapped the 2nd battery that I had sitting in a drawer for those 11 months and have used it ever since (about 6 months) with no issues. Now the replacement battery for the defective one is still in it's wrapper, waiting till I need it.

The only other thing on these batteries that I've found is the handle on the latch is not as tight as the original Canon. The battery seats fine and makes a good tight seal, but the little handle to the latch on the outside of the battery flops around a little.

So I have the original Canon battery and the 2 black diamond ones, with the last one not yet in service. My opinion is that for what they cost, they are a good option, even though there is a small risk of failure - but the warranty is good (and proven).

If you want to see it, here's a link:

I hope this helps.
Tim
