In the mean time, the camera takes excellent images. I don't have experience with the other 1D-ish cameras. The files from this camera make my 30D almost seem like a cruel joke - they appear sharper and smoother, they respond much more readily to adjustment, they can be treated with "violence" and still hold up much longer, and the high ISO characteristics are just awesome. I don't bother with even doing noise reduction in ACR at ISO 800 with this camera - what noise is there simply seems to accentuate the image, and not detract from it. At 1600 and above, they still need some noise reduction - there's at least a stop's worth of advantage over the 30D when looking at test charts (the all grey chart w/ noise), but in practice I'm seeing more like 2 and sometimes 3 stops, due to the way the noise appears in the image.
I've got a few non-action shots up from the camera - mind you, these are images I've been working on paring down to make a portfolio from my trip to Yellowstone last month. So, don't expect them all to be "awesome" pictures But, you can see them at: Yellowstone 2007 Yellowstone 2007 | Awesome pictures of your trip to YS! Can't wait to get out there too some time and see that for my self. Your pictures make it all the more enticing.

| | | Re: So whose loving their MK III? I posted some comments on another forum but will add one here as well. I am very happy with my Mark III and have shot 13,000 images with it including many bird flight shots. I'm a freelance wildlife shooter and have been taking bird images for 30 years. I am not saying that a problem does not exist...it certainly must or so many highly respected and talented photographers would not be experiencing it. Still, for the types of photography I do, I'm very happy with it, and I have just not experienced the host of negative issues that some other folks have reported. Some shots from June and July are posted at: Some Canon Mark III experiences
if anyone is interested. I have included an image, then a 100% crop of part of the image just for information purposes. |

| | | Re: So whose loving their MK III? Excellent images, Greg. Thank you for linking to them. You know your subject matter very well and you have shown that the Mk III is well up to the mark. I also appreciate that other professionals have had issues with the camera.
I use the Mk 2 body without any problems and I shoot a fair cross section of subject matter. You appear to push all of your kit to its limits and the images you have posted look like they will easily support an income.
The techniques which people choose to use are going to be very variable. I grew up with manual stuff and film and having the camera make decisions for me was very hard at first and I had to get the technique as near as possible to my manual techniques. I AF once or I zone focus and wait for the action to enter that zone... works for me but I recognise that it would not work with birds in flight.
I could never be very relaxed about relying on the camera body making a decision that I could not affect until after the event and I still do not entirely rely on all of the electronic assistance that the 1D series offers to the user. Clearly, the Mk III is a capable and professional quality tool.
Kind regards,
Jeff |

Thanks for posting your experience with the camera and also, the wonderful images you have shot with it.

The biggest thing is the increased useability in terms of operation over my 1DMkII - much more like the 5D in terms of easy to use controls etc. Quality is excellent, although I have yet to actually run a direct 5D and 1DMkIII comparison with the same subject and lens.
I love the automatic switch from one card to another, it means I do not have to get all twitchy as I approach card full. :-)
In conclusion, just two words: Faster, Easier. |

| | | Re: So whose loving their MK III? I got to play with one back in March (one of the canon demos used by Michele Celentano). I fell in love with it.
A friend bought one, and second shoots for me at weddings.
I had just about talked myself into a 40D and 28-300L as being a better use of my money, and cheaper too, until I PP'd the images from last week's wedding.
This is an unretouched ISO 3200 shot from that wedding. COnverted, resized and sharpened is all.
WOW. As clean or cleaner than my 30D at ISO 800, but 2 stops more light. Damn! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
