5D tethered to Macbook Pro

I would like to get set up shooting 5D straight into my Macbook pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB Ram.
I use C1 on my PC desktop set up but am hesitating in downloading it at the moment for my macbook. i thought i may check out the Canon software first, as i assume it comes free from Canon.
I am not sure which to use DPP or the Eos utility? I am having a bit of trouble finding all the answers on the Canon website, so i would appreciate anyone using this set up to please give advice.
If all else fails i will try the C1 demo for my upcoming shoots.
Thanks

Re: 5D tethered to Macbook Pro

I currently do all of my studio work shooting a 5D tethered into a 17" G4 Powerbook. I bought Capture One for just this purpose as it was a bit more reliable than the Canon software available about a year ago when I got my 5D. Canon has since made some minor improvements to EOS utiltiy and I've dropped use of Capture One altogether.

Save the money and stick with EOS Utility. EOS Utility is every bit as reliable as Capture One but it provides a more versatile workflow. Unlike Capture One, EOS Utility gives you full control of the camera. You can change exposure and ISO from the computer. It gives you the option of having images recorded both on the computer and the camera's memory card. It's custom file naming capabilities are much more versatile than Capture One.

EOS Utiltiy controls the camera and lets you determine where the images will be recorded. It can also call any other program once the image is recorded. I currently use it with Lightroom. I've also used it well with Bridge. While Capture One does nice conversions, it can't hold a candle to either of those for smoothness of total workflow.

Canon's software install is confusing. As I recall, I had to install all of the software that came with the 5D and then uprade to the latest components downloaded from Canon's site. The last time I looked you couldn't just download the latest version off of Canon's site. You could only access upgrades. EOS Utility is all that you need to get the images into the computer but you may have to install other components to get it all working.

I think the software installs everything by default, but you don't need them to get EOS utility working. I uninstalled the ZoomBrowser and kept just EOS Utility and DPP on the hard disk, and they both work just fine. (You do need the 5D driver installed). I just recently reinstalled ZoomBrowser to investigate some features of it.
