Pocket Wizard with 580EX flash

I thought I remembered someone on the forum saying they triggered a Canon 580EX off camera using a Pocket Wizard. Which cable connects the Receiver to the flash unit? I went to the Pocket Wizard site and could not find one listed. Thanks.

You have to get a hot shoe with a pc plug to seat on the flash's foot. I use a wein-cell safe sync, but that's because I had one around, but any cheap hot shoe should be fine. Then you just need to wire that to the Pocket Wizard.

Thanks. Which model do you have? Does it incorporate a stand adapter so you can mount it on a light stand?

Re: Pocket Wizard with 580EX flash

i'm using a hama hot shoe mount which has a cable with x sync nipple-i bought the x sync to radio slave jack plug-and hey presto(all from B+H NYC) i then attach the hama hot shoe to the little plastic floor mount that comes with the 580EX.(look underneath-it has a thread to attach to a stand or tripod) but, don't forget to use the flashes custom functions to stop the flash from 'sleeping'-keep it turned on. i find the canon's slave system to be nothing short of rubbish, and this is how i found myself having to attach a radio slave to my spare 580EZ

It has a screw hole, which I don't use. I put mine on a elbow joint (I think that's the term) which is on the light stand so I can tilt and aim the flash plus bounce it into an umbrella.

Allen, Hello. I can help you with the information rgarding using your 580EX with a Pocket Wizard. Contact Michael Bass Michael Bass Designs He modified 3 580Ex unis for me and now I can fire them all off camera using Pocket Wizard units (up to 1600 ft range)! This method works really well, and is much better that the built-in Canon IR technology, which has many limitations. If you contact him, mention my name. Having the ability to work with the 580EX units off camera, opens up so many possibilities! I know you will be very happy. He does excellent work, and has very fast turn around.

Allen
I've been using Paramount cords with my PWs and 550s. I've beat the hell out of them and they always work reliably. Here is a link to Paramount's site. You are looking for the hot shoe - miniplug.

Products

They will make custom cords for you to if you need a specific length or type of cord. They put a 1/4 threaded socket on the bottom so you can mount them to stands and clamps.
