It confuses me why the 5D does not provide an image serial number in image files shot to a hard disk (i.e., tethered).
And it further confuses me why the 5D writes a different file name for the same image as a function of where the image is stored, when shooting tethered.
For example, if simultaneously shooting to both a tethered hard disk and to an internal flash card, for the same image, you get IMG_0003.JPG (with no image serial number) for the image stored to the hard disk, and IMG_8572.JPG (with image serial number 000-8752) for the image stored on the 5D's CF card.
Does anybody know why the 5D doesn't provide an image serial number for images stored to anything other the the camera's internal CF card?
If you do a lot of tethered shooting, and you don't keep a CF card in the camera, it sure messes up you file name being representative of shutter actuations.
Since I do a lot of tethered shooting, without a CF card in the 5D, my case indeed is that the image file numbers are not indicative of shutter actuations.
Does anyone know of a way to determine shutter actuations of a 5D, other than to send it in to Canon?
Much appreciate any comment. Thanks!
Best regards,
Bill

Re: Shutter Actuations (Exposure Count) for 5D Bodies
I'm wondering the same thing.
I am able to see the shutter actuations on my 1Ds using CS3 in the advanced EXIF info space ImageNumber. The same field on 5D files doesn't seem to bear any relation to shutter actuations, and I understand from another thread that the same situation applies to some other newer models.
I wonder if anyone has developed any further information on this.

As I recall, someone suggested he use some specialized software to determine his actuation count. If I recall this thread correctly, the thread has been modified.
Searching the internut, I found,
answer to question...is [to] press the info button and it lists how many times the shutter has [pressed] near the bottom.
