Re: 20D with 10-22 vs 5D with 16-35L

The perspective at 17mm is the same on a FF body as on a crop body. It is no less wide on a 20D as it is on a 5D, just cropped vs uncropped.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the 16-35L makes a wonderful 18-35L, even wide open. So if you don't really need the extreme end of the wide range, it's a great lens. And the 5D viewfinder is quite a bit larger than the 20D. The extra real estate is quite nice.

Re: 20D with 10-22 vs 5D with 16-35L

At the last school I attended the canon rep says the issue is that film does not resolve evenly across from the center to the edge, where as a digital sensor is equally sharp everywhere. A FF lens on a 1.6 crop body is never going to be an issue, but on a FF sensor the edges may show softness or vignetting to some degree.

The 16-35 2.8 II is the solution. The new 85 1.2 and 50 lenses were also updated to fix this issue (I almost said resolve the issue ) Canon has a new 1Ds in the works and these issues are very apparent at the higher resolutions coming (20mp is the hint - 22 being perhaps more than most current lenses can resolve).

I have not tried a 5D with 16-35, but if that's your preference seriously consider the the upgrading to the newer version of the lens.

Re: 20D with 10-22 vs 5D with 16-35L

The comment about how the "5d w/ 17-40 smokes the 20D w/ 10-22" is interesting...

As one who's quite happy with my 10-22 on 20D, I'd love to see a head to head comparison... Anyone got an image taken of the same subject and with the same field of view through both?

One thing I found with the 10-22 is that the lens correction features of Camera Raw or the Distort - Lens Correction filter in Photoshop proper can be employed to great benefit. Getting the colors out at the edges back in line, for example, works out marvelously well.

Here's one of my 10-22 20D shots at 10mm, f/4.0, ISO 800, lens-corrected, upsized to 5D size, and sharpened a bit.

Other than the obvious difference in overall pixel count between the 20D and 5D, Frankly I'm having trouble imagining how a 5D wide angle image could "smoke" a 20D image taken through a 10-22 and processed well.

Re: 20D with 10-22 vs 5D with 16-35L

Hi Noel,

The 10-22 is a GREAT lens, and the main advantage of the 5D/17-40 combo is, just as you say, pixel count. I wish I had saved some of the head to head comparisons I did when I had both lenses. Maybe someone else can post something. In any event, if you don't need the increased resolution and detail available from the higher pixel count, by all means the 20D/10-22 combo is sensational.
By the way, I did the same kind of head to head comparison of: 20D/50f1.4 vs. 5D/85f1.8; and 20D/85f1.8 vs. 5D/135f2, and in each case the 5D rig had a lot more detail, so the WA results are really not surprising.

I love the Sigma 12-24 on the 20D too... a great lens. Good to hear it performs well on the 5D too.
