As I am not a Model, I am a Photographer and my works sells, not my face. I see people at car shows for example that dont know me from anyone else, but if they see a sample of my work, they know whom I am.

Hi Kevin,
Sorry. Just saw this post today.
I guess this raises two issues. The one about the avatar is pretty easy. You are welcome to use a company logo or business graphic as your avatar, instead of a head shot, if you prefer. Although, the primary point of the portrait is to promote a more personal feel to the place. I'm unclear as to how you would effectively use this forum as a venue to attract clients. But, you could, I suppose. Either way, it's fine.
The full name policy is a little dicier, unfortunately. I do know of one other person in here who is not using their full name for a similar reason. My guess is that as long as you are providing other legitimate business website references this will not be a problem. However, it's a slippery slope. If everyone starts trying to be anonymous then we lose what separates us from some of the other sites you mention.
Perhaps an imperfect solution to this, in these isolated cases, is to write and post on all forums under the same pen name and provide website references. Then, you are effectively identifying yourself, in a very true sense, just not your physical location or info that could be directly tied to your social security number, etc.
I can understand the concern, but I can also tell you that we always met potential clients in our home, and we have two small children. I am thankful we did not have issues. But, every once in a while a prospective client would leave and we would breathe a sigh of relief and hope that they didn't sign.
