Hi Kevin,

Sorry. Just saw this post today.

I guess this raises two issues. The one about the avatar is pretty easy. You are welcome to use a company logo or business graphic as your avatar, instead of a head shot, if you prefer. Although, the primary point of the portrait is to promote a more personal feel to the place. I'm unclear as to how you would effectively use this forum as a venue to attract clients. But, you could, I suppose. Either way, it's fine.

The full name policy is a little dicier, unfortunately. I do know of one other person in here who is not using their full name for a similar reason. My guess is that as long as you are providing other legitimate business website references this will not be a problem. However, it's a slippery slope. If everyone starts trying to be anonymous then we lose what separates us from some of the other sites you mention.

Perhaps an imperfect solution to this, in these isolated cases, is to write and post on all forums under the same pen name and provide website references. Then, you are effectively identifying yourself, in a very true sense, just not your physical location or info that could be directly tied to your social security number, etc.

I can understand the concern, but I can also tell you that we always met potential clients in our home, and we have two small children. I am thankful we did not have issues. But, every once in a while a prospective client would leave and we would breathe a sigh of relief and hope that they didn't sign.

So what should we call it to avoid confusion?
Vbulletin officially calls it a "username." I'm not real fond of referring to people as users, even though I find myself doing it sometimes.

How about login name.

Re: RePosted. Please Read! Clarified Name and Avatar Policy

Thanks Drew.

I use the same name, Ak Photos, on all forums I am a member of. Its shorter than, Alaskan Photo Tours and Workshops, for a log in...

I understand the reasoning behind the policy, and I agree with it in most cases, and being this is a pay forum, its also easier to verify actual members as well.

Thanks

PS If you reply and I dont reply for the next week or so, I am sorry, but I head out to start shooting the Iditarod in the morning. Thanks again

Kevin, just a subjective comment...

I like to think I'm talking to people here on this board, not businesses or hardware. Drew's point about the look and feel being personal is well-taken. If everyone chooses to represent themselves with a handle and/or non-personal avatar (poorly stated, but you know what I mean) then discussions could possibly take on a more confrontrational flair with folks hiding behind anonymity. I've observed it many times in other places. That's not to say it HAS to happen, nor that it CAN'T happen with more personal identities either.

Have fun at the Iditarod! Wish I was there with you!
