portrait vs. landscape

as the shutter of my 1ds disintegrated and it's with canon for a bit now i am using my 5d for all my work. it is a great camera, indeed! i was considering the vertical grip, but as i hated the 20d one i stayed away from it for now. today i stumbled upon this:

http://www.time.com/time/yip/2005/index.html

do you see that all images are in landscape? coincidence? or are the photographers aiming for double pages? or do they all wait for their vertical grip?

when i was still shooting with rangefinders, 95% of my images were in landscape orientation, with the 1ds with the great vertical holding i shot much more in portrait orientation.

Hi, Stefan,

For what it's worth, I shoot almost all my shots (regardless of the aspect ratio I visualize for the "delivered" image) with the camera in horizontal ("landscape") orientation. It's just a matter of manipulation ease.

Perhaps a vertical grip would make me change my habit!

I've owned countless grips but never used one as intended, I like it for a better handholding feel but never liked using the grips controls unless on a tripod.

They also all appear to be 3:2 aspect ratio. They're all waiting for the Mamiya ZD or digital 4X5.

Re: portrait vs. landscape

Maybe if our eyes were top to bottom rather than left to right we would be shooting more verticals?
Anyways, it's just a more natural way of shooting....to me.

Re: portrait vs. landscape

I often shoot horizontals because that is the format I am more likely to print as a large fine art piece (most walls are not tall enough to accomodate a similarly sized vertical), and therefore I want more res for that use. In contrast, vertical magazine covers are relatively smaller than my fine art prints can be easily cropped out of horizontal 1Ds or 1DsII image. So, I can have both a small cover and large print out of horizontal, but the opposite is not true.

Re: portrait vs. landscape

I shoot a fair amount of portrait-oriented images with my 1DsII, depending on the subject which are often trees , without much thinking whether it's convenient or not. I have also never used the "convenient vertical controls" that previously my Contax ND and now my 1DsII provide. Does anybody ever use those things?

And I actually prefer 2:3 to the squarer formats, as it is closer to how my eyes frame the world to me. But that's just me ...
