I think the 1D would be your best bet, but I think your first purchase should be a new lens. I have the tamron 28-75 and while I like the lens a lot I don't think it tracks very well. I think you'd be better off with a 20D and a Canon USM lens then a 1D and the Tamron if you are concerned with focus tracking.
