Eos 1D (original) firmware problem

I have just been asked to update my firmware on my Canon 1-D (Mark 1). I put the battery in this morning and was greeted with the error message on the back "Firmware update problem. Trouble occurred during update please try again". I hadn't tried updating the firmware prior to this - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The camera would not operate unless I now updated from version 1.3.0 to version 1.4.0.
The camera said the update was successfull, but whenever I put a CF card in I get the message Full CF. Yes, it will format in the camera but the message Full CF still appears. I have formatted the card in other cameras but whenever I put it back into this body. I still get the same error. The CF card is okay in other cameras. I have also erased it on my computer, but still get the same message.
The camera will not take pictures at all. Any ideas or does it mean a trip back to Canon?

Have you tried installing 1.4.0 again? I have this latest firmware in my 1D with no problems.

The original 1D (and 1Ds) does not support FAT32 file format. If you format the card with a newer camera that does, the 1D will not properly recognize the card. You need to format the card in FAT16 mode outside of the camera before the camera can properly use or reformat the card.

Re: Eos 1D (original) firmware problem

Just got my 1D back from Canon. The guys there have had to replace the digital circuit and CF card unit. They couldn't install any firmware to make it work. They tried putting in different (older firmware) with no joy. Although there were no bent pins etc. in the CF card unit they replaced that. So, after a replacement digital circuit and CF card unit, I am £359.00 worse off and still none the wiser as to the problem!!!

Oops. Forgot to add the VAT etc. The final amount was actually £438.96, so hopefully I'll make some money over the weekend to pay for it.
