Re: 1d mk2 and 5d

My main cameras for event work are the 1D MkII and the 1D MkII N. I had a 5D for a few days and could not get rid of it fast enough. In comparisons against the 1D2's it showed me no improved images. I used the same lens, 24-70 f2.8, on all cameras and the 5D was NOT the least better than the Mk2's. In prints to 13 x 19 the 5D did not stand out at all. The 5D felt flimsy compared to the 1 series Canons and , I felt the 5D was not worth the price. I will eventually get a 1Ds MkII but can't justify the expense right now.
My 1D's have been very reliable and profitable for me and I would not consider replacing them especially with a 5D. Now I might have gotten a bad copy of the 5D but around the web I keep seeing articles of people that are not happy with the 5D. For some the price was not justified and others concluded what I have that the 5D is not really any better as far as results are concerned.
I'll stick with my proven 1D2's.
Regards, Fred

Re: 1d mk2 and 5d

Maybe you did get a bad one

I think the build quality is very good, the controls are actually much more intuitive when working under pressure on a pro job than the 2-hand approach of the 1 series, the camera is far easier to use at the top of a high tripod and the images themselves are so much bigger that cropping is a realistic option now.

I think you will probably find a lot more good reviews than bad if you look around

I used to have serious 1-series fever, but I've got over it

Each to their own

Re: 1d mk2 and 5d

I dunno, never picked up a 5D and don't have any real plans on doing so.......but: I do shoot with a 1DII and a 20D as a backup/2nd body and I can say that once you've worked with a 1 series body the 10D/20D/5D sytle camera bodies do feel smaller and well maybe not exactly flimsy but there is a definite feeling of a lighter and less expensive (I refuse to say "cheap", the build quality of those bodies is excellent, its just not in the same class as the 1 series cameras) camera body. Once you've used a 1D you understand the difference, if in nothing else but the feel of it.
I would find it hard to go back to shooting with the 20D/5D style body as a main camera after using a 1D, its just that much better feeling of a camera.
As for images, there are times when I cannot tell which camera I have shot some images with, they're that close under some conditions, and at others its no problem at all to tell what camera the picture came from.......different tools for different needs, IMO.

Re: 1d mk2 and 5d

I don't disagree with anything you say, the 1 series are superbly built and reliable workhorses.

If and when Canon bring out a full frame 1 series, with aboout 13 megapixels that costs only a bit more than the 5D I will buy one immediately, perhaps their next 1 series 'sports' model (1DIII ?)

The 1DsII is without question the BEST, but it is over twice the price of a 5D and only benefits from build, weathersealing, 3 extra megapixels and a better focusing system - actual image quality isn't that different from the 5D. My work is tripod based and mainly manually focused, so no real benefit to me.

The 1DII remains an excellent sport/event camera but it just can't compete with the 5d/1DsII for image quality.

Well ya, we'd all like a 1D type camera for the price of a 20D now wouldn't we..??? Perhaps for your type of work the capabilities of a 1D aren't necessary. I shoot a lot of motorsports and can tell you that the 1D2 is miles away better than the 20D for most of the action, its just no comparison. Yes, you can get darn good sports images with a 20D also, I use mine as a second body, but its been the 1D2 that consistently gets me "the shot".
Being a full-frame sensor I would certainly expect the 5D to produce at least as good a quality image as the 1D2, perhaps even better, which brings me to a point of confusion with your statements...first you say there isnt that much difference between the two as far as images go, and then you close with the statement that the 1D2 just cant compete with the 5D for image quality....which is it??

Re: 1d mk2 and 5d

With RAW capture, the 1D Mark II does compete image-wise with the 5D. The primary difference is a little more resolution on the 5D, but otherwise they are practically identical:

If you read carefully you will see that I compare the image quality of the 5D with the 1DSII, not the 1DII.

The 1DII and 1DIIN are superb cameras, beautifully built, fast in operation with dinky features like in camera backup (which I will miss), but for sheer image quality they are more or less on a par with the 20D (just a bit more DR in the 1 series).

This is excellent for almost all applications, but for me, where my industrial work needs the absolute maximum detail I'm just finding a good deal more in the 5D. I'm sure I'd find another extra bit in a 1DsII and still further in a MF back, but for me the 5D is a perfect compromise between cost, 'cropability', not slowing my PC to a crawl and very high image quality, comfortably as good as my old drum-scanned RZ67 trannies.
