Re: shooting with two 5d

Canon should make it possible to choose whatever filename we want, there is lots of combinations to come up with.
The easiest way should be for us to pick a Prefix of our chice and set the first imagenumber.
Don't you agree...

Renaming after download is only stupid and very risky.

Canon should give us the option in camera of selecting yyyy/MM/DD/HR/MM/SS as a file name.

[/ QUOTE ]

Personally, it is not needed and they should focus the limited firmware space and programming resource on other important items.

With 'free' downloaders such as DIM4 and modestly 'fee' ones such as Downloader Pro, we have the flexibility to automatically create any file name and/or directory we want. In fact, with DIM4 (not sure of Downloader Pro) you can have it prompt you to supply job and/or client name.

I would suggest, if you have not, to check these out and see the flexibility it gives you. More than we could ever expect from "in-camera".

It is renaming during download. Also, both programs have the option to add a suffix if duplicate names occur. I have NEVER had it fail. In addition, if it ever did, you still have the originals on the CF card (until you check and erase them). I trust these programs more than I would trying to create this function in-camera.

Re: shooting with two 5d

Hi, Stefan,

One thing you can do is use Downloader Pro to download your images, and have it use a different format for a modified filename for the images from each camera (it can be programmed to recognize the cameras by body serial number read from the Exif metadata.) (More on this below.)

I put the files from my 300D and my 20D in different directory trees, so I don't have this problem. I do have Downloader Pro put in a 10,000's digit to avoid ambiguity when my filename numbers "turn over". So this filename:

251CANON\IMG_5173.jpg

becomes

IMG15173.jpg

on the hard drive

But if for whatever reason I wanted to put them in the same directory, I would assign a separate letter group for each camera (I do for processed images), and program Downloader Pro to include that in the modified filename. Thus from the first Canon camera ("CA"):

251CANON\IMG_5173.jpg

would become

CA25173.jpg

whereas from the second Canon camera ("CB")

105CANON\IMG_0573.jpg

would become

CB00573.jpg

Again, Downloader Pro will be glad to administer this automatically.

People sometimes ask what I would do if under such a scheme I wanted to see all the files in date/time order. The answer is very simple: have whatever file listing I am looking at them with (Windows Explorer, the File|Open dialog in my image editor, etc.) present them in date/time order (based just on file time/date stamps).

I still think it would be better for Canon to date/time the file names as an OPTION. Its a no brainer programming wise.
