5D artifacts

I am seeing artifacts with my 5D RAW files that I never saw with the 10D or 20D.
I first noticed stairstepping when I shot an car and noticed that the trim around the windshield and the antenna stairstepped. Looking at a metal fence that had a 45 degree support the stairstepping was exceptionaly bad. This effect shows up in DPP, ACR, and RSP so Im sure it is the 5D. In most images it is just visible at 100%, but if you crop the image and return it to 100% it is plainly visible. It seems to me that perhaps in Canon's attempt to get more FPS that they are overrunning the capability of the internal ADCs. Come on Canon I'll settle for less FPS for better resolution. Better yet give us an update to 16 bits also.

It's because the 5D has a weaker AA filter - nothing to do with the internal convertor as the 5D frame rate is pretty low. How exactly is 16bit going to help you with this? Canon have produced a full frame high MP DSLR for a very cheap price - did you expect perfection?

John, I hope you're joking. This is not a cheap camera.

Re: 5D artifacts

Stairsteping is not a function of the AA filter but the speed and number of iterations of the graphics algorythms. A book like "The Zen of Assembly" has a good explation of stairsteping. I don't consider $3300.00 USD an inexpensive camera and I certinly expect a better ADC design that utilizes the more of the information from the sensor.
If you are interested in what 16 bits can do for you, look at the Leica thread on FM. I personly can't justify the cost of Leica lenses or I would have a 10 MP DMR. The R9 is a great camera but for me the system is out of my price range.

Re: 5D artifacts

Rick/Paul - I'm not joking - the price is very cheap for a full frame DSLR - a year ago someone predicting this specification at this price would have been laughed at. Despite your repeated references to the FM forum Paul - I fail to be 'blown away' by DMR images - good though they are and I'm still not convinced 16bit is the magic ingredient. I regularly use a 22mp 16bit MF back (Sinar) - yes it has more resolution and more dynamic range ( nothing to do with 16 bit) but it is not massivley better than my 5D at prints up to A3 and it's certainly a pain in the arse to use on location. For the majority of my editorial stuff which never goes above A3 the 5D is a winner. I've used the 1Ds2 for quite a while as well and it now looks very overpriced for what it delivers in terms of image quality vs price.

Re: 5D artifacts

Paul,
I've experienced stairstepping in one of my 20D shots in RSP. I'm sure it's not the 5D's fault. The image showed stairstepping in RSP, then I took the same RAW file into Capture One and it was gone. Have you opened it up in C1? It's worth a try, and it's a free download anyway. Good luck.
