How To "Balance" On-Camera Flash

The problem with Program mode is the camera will always try to set a high shutterspeed.This could be affecting the ambient as it continually adjusts to "keep" a high speed.For interior shots I always set the camera to Manual.I set shutter to 1/60 & F5.6 (prefered)or f8. ISO is adjusted accordingly to lift the ambient as required.FEC is usually 0 for well lit or +1/+2 if darker.
