Continuous shooting speed

hi everybody,

as you know, the 1D MII has two shutter speeds when it comes new from the factory: 8 (high speed) and 3 photos (low speed) pro second. You can change the speed through the canon software, but this means: high speed can be chosen beetween 4 and 8, low speed beetween 1 and 3.

Is it not possible to improve the "low" speed to 5? I mean, I would like to have high speed at 8 and low speed at 5, because if you photograph some long sequences (i.e. snowboarding lines) in RAW you can take only 19 photos in a raw, and sometimes they are not enough.

thanks

marco

Re: Continuous shooting speed

No, not possible. The only way to have both 5 and 8 fps is to change the personal function to 5 fps and toggle that personal function on and off when you want to change speeds. BTW, you're talking about continuous shooting speed, not to be confused with shutter speed.

David

you are right, sorry, I did't know the right expression in english.
Actually it shouldn't be a great issue for Canon to improve this issue, isn't it?

Re: Shutter speed

If you use a high speed CF card, or, even better, a high speed SD card, you can shoot at 8 frames/second but stop when the viewfinder says you have 5 or 6 shots left. If you pause for a second or two, you can keep shooting for another long burst. I shoot birds as they take off or land, and seldom run out of buffer space this way.

If I absolutely needed many seconds of continuous shooting I would make the choice that some sports shooters do in that situation, which is to shoot Jpegs. That would give you about 40 shots before the buffer is filled, and they write to the card somewhat faster. Just make a couple of test shots to make sure your white balance and exposure are accurate.

On the other hand, if you set the high speed at 4 frames per second using the personal functions, that might prove to be satisfctory for the snowboarding action. Have you tried it?

Re: Shutter speed

Walter,

until now I used to shoot jpegs at long sequences, and I think I will go on doing that. When you get used to the raw fine tuning and quality it's hard to get away from it.
4 shots in a second are not enough because of the riders' speed.
I have both SD and CF cards, sandisk extreme and ultra, but I have to be definitely sure that the buffer space will not get full during the action, most of the times we have just one possibility, then the snow is tracked and no good anymore for further shots. And I would feel not really comfortable asking the guys "please do that again", if it was a dangerous stunt.

ciao
