ETTL2 and Wein Safe Sync

With this Wein Safe sync in between the camera and the 580ex, does this effect ettl2 in anyway?

Re: ETTL2 and Wein Safe Sync

you would lose all dedicated flash (ETTL) functionality, since the only pin signal making it's way to the 580EX is the center sync pin. You could still use the 580EX in manual mode (if not in manual I think it will just fire at full power).

What is your end goal for your setup? (i.e. why would you want to put a safe sync in there if using a 580?)

Re: ETTL2 and Wein Safe Sync

Hi chris

I thought that but wanted to make sure. I have some white lightings that I want to run off this body. They are 120VAC..I "think" and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to fry my 20d by going straight to the PC sync on the body.

The only reason it would go in between the 580 and the body was convienence when I went from mono lights to on camera flash. I could just leave it on all the time.

oh ok. You should check with pault buff/white lightning... those may be in safe voltage range anyway. I have alien bees, and those are fine without the voltage protectors.

I had paramount make me some custom cords with a voltage protector built in for use with another set of monos I used, those protected cords are nice and don't take up the hot shoe. They are similar price, but depends on what kind/length of cord setup you get.

Re: ETTL2 and Wein Safe Sync

I called Canon and they said that the 20d's have a 250v capacity like the 1d2 and 1dsII. He said one of the few "lower end" bodies that have this capability.

My while lightings are 24v, so I think I am safe without the sync. Seems there were two models of the 10,000 WL's PBCS. One set had a red reset button and one model has the green reset button. The green ones have lower voltages and I have the green.

Even so, looks like the 20d's would handle even higher voltages. So that's good news there.

Thanks for the reply.

Joe
