Aerial Photography

Good Day Everyone,

I am looking into transitioning my business to combine my 2 greatest passions: flight & photography.

Does anyone have any good links to Aerial Photographers? I tried googleing without much luck.

Looks like the main investment would be a Gyro System to add to my aircraft which of course it not very cheap.
If anyone has ant knowledge in the topic please let me know.

My plan would be to continue on with traditional photography for income until the aerial stuff can take off (if ever).

I would love to go out and do aerial landscapes, but I'm sure one cannot make a living doing only that so I would have to market on the commerical side of aerial photography as well. Some commercial applications that come to mind might include survey work, property appraisal work, work for government agancies, etc....
Thanks for your time,

--

Re: Aerial Photography

So, why would you want to use a gyro stabilizer for still photos? Since everything is at infinity, depth of field is not an issue, so at ISO 100, you are shooting at 1/1000 at f5.6 on a sunny day. Sharp images, no problems. Overcast? 1/500 at f4. Most lenses can do that and be close to the sharpest f-stop. For video, the gyro would be a good choice, along with a helicopter. I have 32 years doing aerial photography and have never needed a gyro. My airplane is maintained with that in mind, so dynamic prop balancing is done periodically, and the engine is smooth because I manage the fuel/air ratios between cylinders very carefully.

My market is Realtors and Developers, Engineers, Forestry and Timber, Large Industry, Commercial Property Appraisal, Construction Progress, Legal, Shipping and Dock operations, Chambers of Commerce, and larger land owners.

Good luck.

Re: Aerial Photography

Yann Arthus-Bertrand (http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com/) is one of the most well known photographers in France (all categories), and certaintly very successful by any measure. His work is a bit more exciting than the run of the mill commercial aerial shot...

Re: Aerial Photography

Digital might have changed everything, now that you can casually shoot at 400 ISO and in 35mm, but a lot of the work like the one I just mentioned was done on Fuji Velvia, in MF, and at sunset.

Hey Thigpen, What was the process like to get the port made for your airplane? Do you have any pictures of the port?

Re: Aerial Photography

Oh, and I don't think you will need a gyro. In fact it will just get in your way and restrict your movement unless you are shooting out of a helicopter. Most aerial work should provide for fast enough shutter speeds to not need a gyro. JMHO Good luck, Justin
