Re: How \"waterproof\" is the 1Ds ?

I just recently received replacement covers for my EOS 1V and 3 from my regional CPS rep. All I had to do was ask! (Thanks Mr. Malish)

water resistant lenses

[ QUOTE ]
Wow! Thanks for the answer Chuck. I'll quit worrying about a few splashes. Would you mind letting us know what other lenses have this same resistance?

Check out Phil's review.

Re: water resistant lenses

You can add the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM to that list. When shooting in the rain or other forms of precipitation, we recommend adding protective filters and lens hoods to the lenses that use front-mounted filters, like the 16-35, 17-40, 24-70 and 70-200 IS. The IS super-telephotos (300/2.8L IS, 400/2.8L IS, 400/4 DO IS, 500/4L IS and 600/4L IS) already have protective filters built-in and are supplied with detachable hoods.

Re: water resistant lenses

Chuck: Although I realize a UV filter provides some added protection, it seems somehow odd to put another layer of relatively inexpensive glass in front of an expensive L lens; it can't help image quality. When you recommend protective filters, are you talking about the standard issue UV filters or something else?

UV filters are fine for protecting the front element of the lens from rain or other precipitation. And that's all I'm talking about here. I am not making any recommendation one way or another about the use of clear filters for conventional photography where precipitation is not involved. That's a matter of personal taste.

Re: water resistant lenses

hey chuck, what about the 400 2.8L II non IS (the one that came right before the IS version)? I am in the process of acquiring one and am curious... if it isnt sealed as well, could you give me an idea of what to expect, or should I just run for cover at the first sign of rain?
