File numbering systems - Multiple 1D bodies

Hi all - I've also posted the same question on the D30 Forum but I think this might be even more relevant on the 1D forum -- due to faster (much faster) FPS rate on 1D I would imagine a lot of shooters will be taking many more pix than with D30. I often use 2 bodies with different lenses attached -- saves time in switching Lenses mid stream. I get a problem if I am not careful when transferring images to computer because the D30 cameras use the same numbering systems e.g 102, 104, 104 etc.
This is likely to be even more of a problem with the 1D unless there is a mode in the camera software which allows the file numbering system to be pre or post fixed with a user settable ID such as body1, body2 etc.
I know the EXIF information will tell you which body you were using but this does not stop you overwriting files on your computer when they have the same name. It's not always easy to be as careful as one should especially in the heat of a prolonged event shoot such as loads of bikes in a short time etc.
Chuck -- where are you --surely Canon must have assumed pros usually take more than 1 body with them on a shoot.
Cheers all

Re: File numbering systems - Multiple 1D bodies

Hi, Raptor:

The EOS-1D's filenaming style essentially eliminates this concern, since it is substantially different than the D30's.

EOS-1D files use an 8.3 format (i.e., 8 characters followed by a period and a file type extension, either .JPG or .TIF). The first 4 characters are partially derived from a portion of the camera's serial number, and the last 4 characters are digits that the camera automatically increments.

The first 4 characters will vary from camera to camera. Therefore, we don't anticipate any file numbering problems with multiple cameras. Also, the number of images per folder has been increased from 100 in the D30 to 9,999 in the EOS-1D, and folders can be created and selected manually in the camera. Last but not least, it's possible to manually change the first 3 digits of any image data subfolder by mounting the CF card on the desktop with a card reader, so that you can ensure there will be no duplication of folder numbers between multiple cameras if you wish.

Re: File numbering systems - Multiple 1D bodies

Chuck !

Is it possible that canon can make a sw update for filenumbering in D30 as well ? I would be happy if I could choose to leave the first CRW out of the file name, and have folder number instead of CRW_XXXX. The four digit file number isn't enough for my purposes (shooting at schools and kindergarten) as I refer to the filenumber printed on the back of the prints when My customer want to reorder.

Please tell me that it might be fixed.

Re: File numbering systems - Multiple 1D bodies

Hi, Jorgen:

I doubt that Canon inc. would ever change the way the D30 names its files. However, you'll be able to circumvent that issue by using the batch renaming function in the EOS-1D driver software because that SW is also partially compatible with EOS D30 files.

"Partially" means that you can't get all of the features that are available with EOS-1D RAW files, but batch conversion and renaming are available for files from both cameras.

Re: File numbering systems - Multiple 1D bodies

FYI- I've never had a problem with the numbering system using several D30's because after every shoot I do a batch adjustment to all the images on a shoot. This includes renaming them (Usually the name of the car plus a 3 digit numbering system) and adding copyright information. I all of this with the batch processing abilities of Photoshop 6.

In any case the numbering system of the 1D sound fine.
