Canon Thanx for Info (Image quality)

Hi all -- it does seem as though firmware problem on EOS 1D has been degrading sample pix from pre-prod cameras. I think I wasn't the only one who has been disappointed so far with the image quality especially given the spec of this camera and what we are used to seeing from the D30 (Might be assuming a lot here but I am sure around 65 - 70% of the market for this camera will come from previous D30 users).
Anyway hopefully we will get proper pix when the firmware is fixed.
So the jury's still out.

Cheers all

I think that the target buyers are current DCS520/D2000 users and those Canon news/sport/editorial shooters who have not yet gone digital. Of course the EOS1D will pick up some D30 users, but Canon are really targeting those (like me) whose DCS520s are 3 years old and whose need for a replacement top line digital is greater than our worries about price (although we would all rather pay less!)

Neil.

i too have been shooting the dcs520 and am now in a quandary as to sell it for a HUGE loss from the original cost or to keep it on the shelf after my 1d arrives

Neil hit it correctly. Most D-30 users in the area (other than papers who bought them as a temporary measure) say the 1D is too high priced and for what they do and not worth it. Others that use 520's/D2000's are chomping at the bit to buy and replace or add the 1D to the 520's, myself included. I shoot lots of sports with 520's and the D30 just didn't cut it.

I only bouught the D30 as a stop gap until Canon came out with the 1D. I shoot motorsports and crave what the 1D offers for me.

I'll wait a bit towards the first of next year to purchase, but will leave the D30 as a back up once I have the new 1D in hand.

Re: Canon Thanx for Info (Image quality)

Yes -- probably right. I didn't go for the DCS 520 at the time because it was way way out of my price league ( I was still shooting film --EOS1V). I do events now and the D30 was an entry into high quality digital at a reasonable price. It has more than matched my expectations but as my workload has increased I do need something faster and more rugged. The 1D looks like it will do the job so long as image quality OK. I had been thinking of picking up a used DCS 520 but the 1D (New) is a "no brainer" choice in this case.
Thanks all
