| Re: 1-D Where is the money going? Sorry, but I'm with Dixon on this one.
I posted about this same thing in another thread.
When the EOS 3 came out 3 years ago, I was all over like a fool and his money are soon parted.
I bought 2 of everything; bodies, boosters, 550EX flashes, Quantum cords, infrared transmitter.
I was never really happy with the EOS 3. It was too noisy and I found the 45 point eye-controlled focus to be too inaccurate for my taste.
Then the EOS 1V came out. I bought one, got blown off my feet by how much better a camera it was and traded both EOS 3 bodies for a second EOS 1V body.
THEN...the D30 came out. My newspaper went totally digital a few years back anyhow.
So...I waited until the initial uproar went away and got a great deal on one.
While I appreciate the ease of my working life now with digital vs. the hassles of film, and appreciate the fact that I've become proficient at using a digital SLR thanks to the D30, I find it heartless and cruel that Canon would expect someone who plunked down $3,000 a year ago for a D30 to just up and dump twice as much a year later for the 1D.
For the lucky staffers who get the latest toys handed to them on a platter, wonderful for you.
For the majority of us out here who have to WORK and EARN and SPEND our own hard earned dollars on our own equipemnt, I think that's a lot to ask.
I make a living shooting for a major metropolitan newspaper, but not as a staffer. I also shoot predominantly sports. Would the 1D be just what I need? Sure, absolutely.
Can I justify dumping a $3,000 camera the same year I bought it for a new and improved $6,500 camera? Maybe.
Can I afford to do so? Not really.
While I have no plans to add a second D30 to my stable, or rid of the D30 if I even got a 1D, I would rather wait and see what is just around the corner.
Nikon beat Canon to the market with the D1, then went back to the drawing board and offered two new improved models specifically suited for different shooters.
I can only hope that Canon is planning the same... |
