1-D Where is the money going?

The 1-D has only a marginal increase in resolution from the D-30. But the price is double. Face it, no one is switching to the 1-D for image quality; all we want is the fast focus and the durable body. So can I justify this high price just for those features?

If the D30 sells for under $3000, the 1-V sells for under $2000, why is the 1-D $6500?

In using the D30 for horse event photograpy I have found that image quality is great but a small number of pictures are out of focus. I do not think this new cameral is worth the big bucks for my business. I am sticking with the D-30 till resolution goes up or price goes down.

That's right, the only thing we want is an EOS D30 (3D/D3) with 45 point (eyecontrolled please !!!)autofocus and of course a CMOS sensor in it. We want to make pictures, not a movie ! We don't need the speed of clicking, but we need the speed of focus !

Research & development. These things cost money, alot of money. Nikon has been churning out the D1 for 2 years, so their initial R&D cost has been recouped. The D1H&X are just upgrades to an existing product, which is far cheaper for them than a new one. (EOS-1D)

Re: 1-D Where is the money going?

Sorry, but I'm with Dixon on this one.
I posted about this same thing in another thread.
When the EOS 3 came out 3 years ago, I was all over like a fool and his money are soon parted.
I bought 2 of everything; bodies, boosters, 550EX flashes, Quantum cords, infrared transmitter.
I was never really happy with the EOS 3. It was too noisy and I found the 45 point eye-controlled focus to be too inaccurate for my taste.
Then the EOS 1V came out. I bought one, got blown off my feet by how much better a camera it was and traded both EOS 3 bodies for a second EOS 1V body.
THEN...the D30 came out. My newspaper went totally digital a few years back anyhow.
So...I waited until the initial uproar went away and got a great deal on one.
While I appreciate the ease of my working life now with digital vs. the hassles of film, and appreciate the fact that I've become proficient at using a digital SLR thanks to the D30, I find it heartless and cruel that Canon would expect someone who plunked down $3,000 a year ago for a D30 to just up and dump twice as much a year later for the 1D.
For the lucky staffers who get the latest toys handed to them on a platter, wonderful for you.
For the majority of us out here who have to WORK and EARN and SPEND our own hard earned dollars on our own equipemnt, I think that's a lot to ask.
I make a living shooting for a major metropolitan newspaper, but not as a staffer. I also shoot predominantly sports. Would the 1D be just what I need? Sure, absolutely.
Can I justify dumping a $3,000 camera the same year I bought it for a new and improved $6,500 camera? Maybe.
Can I afford to do so? Not really.
While I have no plans to add a second D30 to my stable, or rid of the D30 if I even got a 1D, I would rather wait and see what is just around the corner.
Nikon beat Canon to the market with the D1, then went back to the drawing board and offered two new improved models specifically suited for different shooters.
I can only hope that Canon is planning the same...

Re: 1-D Where is the money going?

Nikon didn't really go back to the drawing board. The D1x and D1h both offer fairly minor ehancements over the D1 but plenty of bug fixes. The 1D is a much faster camera than either Nikon and its image quality should be close to the D1x's. If you are a photo journalist who shoots sports, I don't see a better camera coming any time soon. It will be a while before you can even get the 1D.

Compared to other pro grade digital SLRs the price seems reasonable. Compared to the D30, it seems expensive but so do most digital SLRs. When the D30 first cam out, its most noted feature was its very low price, appreciation of its image quality came later.

Re: 1-D Where is the money going?

Dennis, Until we have seen images from a production 1D, we can't be sure just how good the 1D images will be relative to the D1x.

The D1x has a higher horizontal resolution than the 1D, but the 1D has a higher vertical resolution. The diagonal resolution of the 1D will probably also be higher.

I would expect that the D1x images will look better for some subjects and the 1D will be better for others.
