EOS-1D Pro observations

1. I can find no mention of a zoom feature for the playback image on the LCD. This is most bizzare especially on a pro camera where sports shooters need to check if a shot is critically sharp in the field before trudging back to the press tent to load the images onto a laptop.

2. A quote from the Canon USA web page states:
quote:
A bladed rotary-magnet shutter, similar to the ones used in EOS-1v and EOS-3, is used to protect the CCD and provide timing during longer exposures; this shutter is durability-tested to 150,000 exposures.
This suggests that the shutter *does not* control the timing of exposures and that the CCD is primed electronically to determine the "shutter speed"

3. Why a NiMH battery instead of a theoretically higher capacity Li-ion type as found in the D30 which suffers no memory effects on top-up charges.

4. All the specs state a max burst of 21 frames in JPEG large/fine and also 21 in large/normal. Surely you can squeeze more frames into the buffer using the smaller JPEG file - unless the buffer is being used to process the shots prior to being written out to the card. Can anyone clarify if more than 21 shots can be buffered in large/normal???

Finally the best bit:
"Q: How does the EOS-1D compare with the EOS-1v in terms of durability and impact resistance?
A: The EOS-1D is superior to the EOS-1v in this respect. "

Look forward to testing that bit out.
Bibi

Re: EOS-1D Pro observations

Not trying to start an argument here, but as a sports shooter with well upwards of 30K exposures on my D30, I have found the preview window on the D30 to be practically useless as a means of "critically" judging virtually anything other than basic framing. I have taken very out of focus shots that looked just fine in the low-res preview window, even when enlarged. Rude surprise later on, to have not taken a second (or third, or fourth) exposure, thinking the one you've already got is in critical focus because it looked that way in the preview window.

I have also found the preview window to be very, very approximate in terms of judging exposure - it can make a pretty badly exposed shot look just great. Checking the histogram is a much better test than the preview window, but that takes the time to press another button.

That said, I'm sad the 1D doesn't have the enlarge feature, even though I don't use it very often (primarily because you can't pan around the full image easily when enlarged, and also because paging back through existing exposures is a pretty clunky process.) Besides, at the pace and volume I'm generally shooting at, there isn't time to stop and check every shot anyway (also kills batteries).

And yes, I will ditch my D30 in a minute for a 1D (actually, I'd be happy to have a second digital body!)...if I can just find the incredible number of dollars it's going to take to own one..

Re: EOS-1D Pro observations

According to the DP Review site re the LCD:

>>Note also that there is no function for magnifying an image. I personally would like to have seen this feature.<<

Ditto. I too am somewhat shocked that a flagship pro camera would lack this feature. Hmmmm.

Re: EOS-1D Pro observations

To the preceding posters,

I would presume that photogs who are
registered on this site are of the
quality that they would need a LCD
screen with a 'magnifying'/'zooming'
capacity to check the sharpness of
their images.

Now, someone like me--see my handle--
still requires a 10X-22X loupe before
making a print.

Re: EOS-1D Pro observations

Canon really needs to get back to work and add this feature before the camera's release.

How ironic that every single D30 user in the world has asked for increased zoom capabilities and the 1D leaves it out entirely.

There is another use for zoomed playback aside from checking focus. Say you're shooting somewhere with 8000 kids running around. It's helpful to be able to zoom in and check faces to get ids.

To TimC
Just a quick fyi - one of the custom functions (can't remember which one and the manual is not handy) for the D30 allows you to set the camera so that the instant review image on the LCD is the histogram image.

If that's your preferred view on the LCD, you can set it so it's the default and no extra button push is required.

Re: EOS-1D Pro observations

As a DCS520 user can any one tell me how noisy the shutter will be on the EOS D1. It is a bitloud on my bodies. I will be buying one by the look of it so far. The hair detail on the high key shot was amazing. If that was unalterd!
