| Re: 1D - Am I wrong to be disappointed? On E-TTL: Film SLRs do TTL by taking a meter reading of light reflected off the film. Not surprisingly, this is very difficult to do off of CMOS/CCD, so E-TTL instead does two flashes (extremely quickly; you certainly can't tell there are two): One very short (low power) flash to determine exposure before actual exposure and then the normal one during exposure. You can initiate the first on yourself on a D30 using the '*' button. This works well except for the D30's rather pathetic way of metering flash (on the active AF point in AF mode, center weighted in MF mode) and is equivilant to TTL.
On USB readers: I obtained a firewire CF reader for my PC (works in Linux and Win) quite economically. A firewire card is pretty cheap too if you don't have a firewire port. I have also used a PCMCIA reader on my laptop. Both are extrodinarly fast compared to USB; firwire feels pretty close to a local HD.
